Proper planning can mean an organized, coordinated and much less stressful move, but lots of folks neglect this facet of their relocation. An experienced moving consultant offers some facetious advice for doing it wrong. 1. Avoid Planning! There’s absolutely no fun in having your relocation (especially a long distance move) go off without any amusing hitches. Boring, organized people would have you make a list of all the jobs that need doing and a timeline in which to accomplish them, but won’t it be more fun to just wing it? 2. Don’t set a budget! Keeping track of your moving costs might help the bottom line, but who really wants to know how much this is gonna cost? Appliance and utility disconnection and reconnection, insurance, travelling or temporary living expenses can all add up if you’re not paying attention! Oh well, max out those credit cards and worry about it later! 3. Don’t read the fine print! There’s always a bunch of paperwork, usually containing unfamiliar terminology when you move. If you glance at them occasionally you can probably figure out what you need to know. Trust your moving company to keep you apprised of the important stuff, after all, moving companies are always trustworthy and capable, right? 4. Don’t overthink packing! Whatever you do, don’t get the movers to do the packing for you, it’s super easy! Get a buch of boxes from the supermarket and chuck your stuff in them, it should only take a couple hours so start the day before you move. If you don’t quite get finished I’m sure the movers will be happy to help when they arrive! 5. A change of plans is always good! Keep things exciting by changing your move date a few times after you’ve booked the moving company, they love a challenge. Make sure there’s a surprise for them when they arrive on moving day too, buy that new furniture BEFORE you get to the new house, they can just jam it into the moving truck. 6. Children and pets love moving! So get your kids to help the movers, promise them a ride in the moving truck if they’re good. You can probably lock Fido in the cab of the moving truck to keep him out of the way while your house is being emptied. That way, if he gets nervous and makes a mess or chews something to pieces it’s not your problem! 7. Don’t bother getting special coverage for Grandma’s priceless museum quality art collection! Her original Picasso should be covered by the regular moving company coverage! Not that it’s even remotely possible that anything could happen to the things you so carefully stuffed into those soggy supermarket boxes, right? 8. Don’t organize ahead of time! Why bother getting your change of address, transferring your medical and dental records, or switching your utilities until after your move. All in good time, you don’t want those bills catching up with you in a hurry anyways! When it comes to planning your move, doing it wrong means you’ll never be bored! You might be stressed, worried, harried and anxious, but not bored. If that doesn’t sound like fun to you, you should try hiring a reliable moving company and taking the advice of your moving consultant – they know how to do it right!
