A new study found out that there is a link between the common sleep disorder, sleep apnea and depression. The study suggests that when the said sleep disorder becomes severe, it may be linked to major depression. In people with severe sleep apnea, the upper air passage was blocked by the soft tissue at the back of the throat during sleep. The condition results in breathing pauses and other sleep symptoms like snorting, gasping and snoring. According to the new study, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the researchers involved 9,700 American adults in the survey and found out that 6% of men and 3 percent of the woman admitted they had been diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. The researchers found out that symptoms of the sleep disorder were linked to many depression symptoms which includes feeling of failure or hopeless. The said association was not affected by factors such as weight, age, sex or race according to the researchers. However, the researchers noted that there was no link found between usual snoring and depression. The result of the study was published in the April issue of the monthly journal,“Sleep”. In a news release from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, one of the study’s author, Anne Wheaton, a CDC epidemiologist said that she and her co-authors expected people with sleep disordered breathing to report problem sleeping or sleeping too much or feeling, or feeling unrested and having little energy left, but not the other symptoms like hopelessness. Although the study unveiled a link between obstructive sleep apnea and depression, it did not confirm a cause-and-effect relationship. Granted that that said study is proven to be true and correct that there is a link between depression and severe sleep apnea, the said study needs to go further due to several issues that should be factored in before coming up in an absolute fact. Most often, people with such sleep disorders tend to take sleeping pills as their sleep aids or to send them to sleep even without seeing a doctor. However, sleeping pills are only safe upon doctors’ prescription. Therefore, people should take the pills with proper precautions.
