The 2003 Victorian Senior Amateur Championship, one of the most popular events on the VGA Calendar, will be played at the Shepparton and Hill Top Golf Clubs from October 27th-30th, 2003. The Championship is open to male amateurs who are aged 55 and over and have an Australian Handicap of 18 or less. Preparations are serie taylormade burner 2.0 already well advanced for the 2003 event to be held in the heart of the Goulburn Valley. The Shepparton Golf Club was established in 1922 following a design by Sam Berriman. Despite large expanses of flat land in and around Shepparton, the course is uniquely located on gently undulating natural sand hills around five kilometres from the City Centre on Golf Links Drive. The par 72 course is 6036 metres in length and winds beautifully amongst a bevy of pine trees. The greens are well guarded by 67 bunkers found on the course. At 6123 metres and a par of 73, Hill Top Golf Club is slightly longer than Shepparton but offers a similar challenge to players. While reasonably flat, the course is also characterised by narrow taylor made rbz fairways lined by large numbers of native trees. The course was designed by Eric Horne and Harry Brown and opened in 1964. Currently part of the course is being re-modeled by renowned golf architects Thomson, Wolveridge and Perrett following a residential development being undertaken with the club. The Championship is played over 72 holes stroke play. The first round is played at Shepparton on Monday 27th October and the second round at Hill Top on Tuesday 28th October. Given the overwhelming popularity of the Championship, the VGA Match Committee has extended the size of the maximum starting field to 200 players. If this number is reached, play will be in groups of four for the first and second rounds. A cut is made after 36 holes with 72 players qualifying for the final two rounds to be played alternately at Shepparton and Hill Top. However, it is a "cut" with a difference.mizuno jpx 800 The leading 36 stroke scores (plus ties) qualify for the final 36 holes. The remaining places are then made up of players with the lowest nett scores. In this way, the higher handicap player has as much chance of qualifying for the final two days as a lower marker. Trophies are awarded for both overall stroke and nett performance. The Victorian Senior Amateur Handicap title is played in tandem with the overall Championship, players being ineligible to win trophies in both areas. Leading stroke and handicap trophies are also awarded for each age group.
