Geographic information system is a computer system that is helpful in the planning and organizing of geographic data. In the easiest form it is computerized mapping. It is used to handle maps and is also helpful in detecting natural hazards such as earthquakes. The use of GIS is not limited to a certain area. Geographic Information Systems is used in different sectors like transportation, water shed management, economic development, infrastructure, etc. There are a number of reasons to opt GIS as the benefits the agencies get are many. The system is not a very expensive equipment, can reduce the manpower used and can give productive results. Hiring expertise technicians can be avoided by the Geographic information system. Water is the renewable natural resource and plays a vital importance. The increase in the demand of water, droughts and the human power has put a threat endangering both the quality and quantity of water resources. So it gets very important for the rational management and sustainable development of the resources. GIS software is becoming an essential tool for the management of resources and better understanding of the places and the world. GIS is being used by billions of people for public safety, engineering, health, water resources, etc. The shortage of water has reached an alarming stage and at this point it gets important to sort out hydrologic issues. Geographic Information Systems is helpful in storing, assembling, displaying, manipulating data as per as the location. GIS is widely being used even by NGOs and LGUs as it assists in answering the questions just by having a glance at the map. One needs not to go through the entire confusing data stored. Geographic information system is providing rising solution for water resources such as assessing the quality and quantity of water. The development of surface water can help to deal with the growing demand of water. The use of GIS can keep a check on and record data about the current status of surface water. GIS is used for remote sensing and sustainable development of surface water. With the help of GIS water bodies can be displayed. GIS improves the quality of water and manages both ground and surface water carefully. Geographic Information System helps in the effective floodplain management. It helps in taking corrective and preventative measures for sinking flood damage. Geographic Information System is widely used in many industries due to the development in server processing potential.
