Why Being Cheap Won’t Cut it: Going All-Out on Color Brochure Printing

Brochures have been an industry staple for so many years. They have helped in introducing countless companies, businesses, products and services through the years. Brochure printing has also evolved from standard black-and-white to full-color glossy prints. With such an effective and essential promotional tool, it only seems logical to go all-out with its design, production and distribution.

However, pulling out all the stops is not an easy task, especially with today’s economic crisis and with the recession hitting American soils hard, saving up as much as possible and scrapping all unnecessary costs will go a long, long way. But then, inevitably out comes this question: is going all-out on promotional color brochure printing a crucial step for business, or is it considered sinfully wasteful?

The Price of Fame

When it comes down to it, a brochure—or a leaflet… or a pamphlet—has only one purpose in the business world: to get other people to notice the business. It’s an advertising instrument made to infuse eye-catching media with information, and condensed to a compact, handy form. As everyone knows, a company can’t supply its products and services without having a demand, and a business can’t create a demand when customers don’t know that there’s an available supply. The humble, glossy brochure bridges the gap between the two cycles so that they can meet.

It is, therefore, absolutely imperative that a company or business or product gain a household name status—something that instantly creates a recall in the minds of its customers. But how much will it cost the company to achieve that advertising goal? How much is the price of fame?

A full color standard 8.5” by 11” (or the US letter) size brochure will cost around $120-$150 for 500 copies. That’s roughly $4 for a piece of glossy paper which you can buy at less than a dollar per pack of 10. Of course, more work has been added to the glossy paper to warrant the price increase: all the attractive images will be there—in full color, no less—as well as info on the company. The paper has also been folded into the characteristic panels of a brochure, and has been delivered straight to the buyer’s home. Surely that will justify the price of online color brochure printing.

Still, many people might want to cut down on costs by tweaking their orders. Things such as paper size, paper quantity and color selection add up to the total price of printing, so smart shoppers tend to shrink their canvas, minimize the quantity and reduce the number of colors to 1 or 2 tones. Taking those cost-efficiency measures, the new optimized order will promise to cut back expenses to at least… five dollars.

How can that be? For starters, most printing companies use the US letter as their standard and smallest-sized brochure, and since the size of the paper used won’t change whether buyers opt for the bi-fold, tri-fold or Z fold, changing panels won’t affect the price. As for choosing grayscale or minimizing colors—most printers use the four-color printing process which mixes cyan, yellow and magenta inks to produce primary colors. Even if someone were to choose designs consisting of only two blocks of color, the same amount of ink will be used if three, four, or full-color designs were used. As for minimizing the quantity… Well, obviously, the fewer items to order, the lesser the total price will be. The only thing that will dramatically spike up the total price is the turnaround time. Rushing orders to be delivered within 2-3 days’ time will double the total price of the order.

So being cheap in ordering online color brochure printing? Forget it—it’s not worth the trouble. The few dollars that will be saved is dismissible when compared to the impact that a full-color brochure can bring to the market. Remember that the best foot must be put forward to make a good first impression. And first impressions last a considerably long time—so it’s important to make it count!
