There are few careers that have as positive a growth percentage predicted through 2020 as those in healthcare services. At higher than 35 percent, dental assistants are among the career choices that can have you working in the field as soon as one year, and in some cases, even less than that. A dental assistant requires a high school diploma to start. It is a good idea to include some science courses, like biology, health, and chemistry. Because of all the administration work with the position, familiarity with using a computer and all the common business applications is recommended. These steps will provide a nice boost when moving forward with either accelerated training or a college degree. The dental assistant is able to complete a minimal training course averaging 1 year in order to get their certification. With more than 250 accredited curriculums available, it is important to be assured that the course undertaken is approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). Most dental assistants can work without a state issued license. However, those assistants who want the advantage of being able to take dental x-rays will need to get one. All radiological procedures require it. Beyond that, like any job, there will be significant on the job training as almost every office has their own way of doing things. Ultimately, experience is the best teacher and the best way to get to know your way around dental equipment, and with time the second language of dental terminology will sink in. With regards to a license, it is a state by state issue. Each state has its own rules and requirements to obtain one. The burden could be as light as a few courses and a test or as heavy as frequent re-certification. Most states also have a continuing education requirement of some kind. Students who have taken the initiative to accomplish a 2-year associate's degree and then acquire on-the-job experience set themselves up beautifully for advancing or even crossing into higher paying positions. As with any career in the healthcare industry, dental assisting can be a rewarding choice in itself or a useful stepping stone to prepare for further career advancement. The dental sciences are advancing rapidly with the technological advances that are always occurring. This, along with continuing education, makes the choice of dental assistant a wise choice for a quick start and a path to multiple options into the future.
