Khandwa is small town in the Nimdad region or Nimar region in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The place shares its name with district called Khandwa District which was formerly known as East Nimar District. This is known as an ancient town and holds its religious value along with several antique structures of Hindu and Jain shrines. Based on the historical evidences, the city was pointed as one of the main center of Jainism in 12th century AD. The name Khandwa is believed to have originated from "Khandav Van" means Khandav Forests. The place is closely related with the mythological story of Lord Rama and it is said that during the exile period Lord Rama formed four kunds with his arrows to search the drinking water for his consort Sita. These four historic kunds are Padma kund, Suraj kunda Rameshwar kund and Bhima kunda. Khandwa and the nearby Burhanpur experienced the time of Mughal-period. The East Nimar district was highly involved in early stage of the freedom movements of Indian and also noticeably participated in Quit India Movement . The place experienced many great personalities like Lokmanya Tilak, Dayananda Saraswati, Mahatma Gandhi and Swami Vivekananda and many other. The place boasts of some ancient monuments and buildings which are presently used as Collector office, and Girls Degree College. Dada Dhuni wale ki samadhi, Nav-chandi Devi Dham and Turja Bhavani Temple are some tourists destinations known for its religious faiths. Ghantaghar (Clock Tower) is an ancient tower. Omkareshwar Mandhata is a religious place located on the bank of Narmada River and it is believed as a holy shrine of both Hindus and Jains. The Mamaleshwar, one among the pious 12 Jyotirlingas of Hindus and Siddhawar Kut of Jain sect became a hub of huge tourists included foreigners. The caves of Adi Guru Shankaracharya (The great ancient saint of advait philosophy ) are a most visited place. Indira Sagar Dam at Narmada Nagar, Dada Dhuni Wale Darbar Khandwa, Nagchun Dam, Gauri Kunja are some well visited attractions of Khandwa. There are some places in and around the Khandwa like Ichhapur (Temple of Ichhadevi) in Burhanpur District, Mahalgurara (ancient royal leisure pavilion on the bank of Badi Utaoli river) in Burhanpur District, Navgriha Temples, Mandu in Dhar District, Rajwada and Holkar state related old monuments in Indore District, Bawan Gaja in Barwani District, Chamunda temple in Dewas District and Maheshwar & Mandleshwar in Khargone District. The place is well marked for inventing colored cotton in late nineties. This old place is well connected with the other places and known for its local crops like cotton, wheat and soyabean. Bareli Rathwi, a Bhil language are well spoken language along with Hindi. Local people use Devanagari script in writing. Guru purnima, Dessara, diwali, holi are some prominent festivals of this place. Special aarti are organized at Dadaji darbar on gurupurnima every year. Here Dessara is also grandly celebrated with Ravan Dahan.
