For the greatest impact, plant several rows as near to the source of pollution as possible. The thicker the barrier, the better. You may want to plant a hedge simply for visual or architectural interest. A brilliant border plant is lavender which also smells great or you could opt for one of many box hedge which can produce an interesting border for any purpose.
