Upholstery cleaning recommendations

Home Improvement
Spills, stains and normal wear and tear can leave your upholstered furniture looking less than fresh. Might you clean it yourself or leave the task to the pros? That depends.

While manufacturers normally advise professional cleaning, plenty of spots and stains can possibly be handled at home without any risk to the furniture. To help you choose, take into account three main variables:

A. Type of stain

B. Fabric type

C. Size and location of stain

First, check out the manufacturer's tag to determine the fabric material. (If necessary, ask your retailer or consult the manufacturer). If the fabric is synthetic, you can typically safely clean it at home, as synthetic fabrics were designed for simplicity of care. If the fabric is a natural/synthetic blend, however, use care and tryout a small, hidden patch to start with. If the upholstery is greater than 50 % cotton, professional cleaning might just be your best bet if the stain is large, dark or in a very visible spot.

The easiest upholstery stains to clean are actually those that are handled while they are still fresh. The toughest to clean are grease and oil. Any kind of very large spot may be best left to a professional. Some suggestions on improving your likelihood of successful results:

1. Upholstery sprayers are economical and often work satisfactorily on organic stains, however they are not effective on grease or oil.

2. Water is not your friend. Make use of as little water as feasible to clean upholstery. Use a spot remover first, but in case you must use a water-based approach, use it modestly for best results.

3. Coffee Stains: Blend a small quantity of dish detergent, water and vinegar and dab sparingly till coffee fades away.

4. Baby wipes are remarkably efficient for cleaning upholstery since they deliver the right amount of soap and water, are rather gentle, and evaporate quickly.

5. Coffee Stains: Blend a small amount of dish detergent, water and vinegar and swab moderately till coffee disappears.

6. Mold or mildew: Combine a quarter cup of hydrogen peroxide and a quarter teaspoon of color safe bleach. Gently apply the stain using a clean cloth wetted in the solution. Rub spot using fresh water used modestly and let dry.

Stubborn Stains:

Grease or oil: Sprinkle salt, cornstarch or talcum powder on the spot once you discover it. Rub in very carefully, permit grease to lift off upholstery and soak up into spot remover. Brush away grease and powder and clean off with a dampish cloth.

Crayon: Try employing non-gel tooth paste to get rid of crayon marks from water-safe upholstery. Rub it gently on the surface, a smaller part at a time, then wipe off using a moist cloth.

Did you know you can reduce overall dirt and soiling of your upholstered furniture by vacuuming it on a regular basis? Special upholstery add-ons for your vacuum system can make it easy to reach small corners and folds, and are safe for use on fabrics. Vacuum furniture about every two months, or weekly in case you have pets or allergies.
