Large scale revamps and reconditioning has been carried out in immigration statutes. Older system was posing several complex issues, which were hard to resolve and hindered efficient operations. Formerly a lot of time had to be invested by staff to shortlist applications that fulfilled Aussie parameters. Relevance of occupations to SOL was a major issue.
Next step involved assembling applications on basis of place of origination of requests i.e. applications filed from inside country were handled under different sections and offshore applications were tabulated under separate sub-classes. Point based assessment on relevant visa sub classes was undertaken manually. Overall, this bulky system was a slow moving mammoth, consuming a lot of time to arrive at a decision on any individual case. A consistent need was being felt for simplifying whole process that could be lean and fast. After much research and close collaboration between authorities, different departments and stakeholders SkillSelect was conceptualized.

This system has been integrated into skilled immigration scheme and elementary changes incorporated in Australian Laws of Immigration. Visa statutes have been completely remodeled. A long list of visa sub-classes has been streamlined by introducing new sub–sections through merger and amalgamation of old diversely defined classifications i.e. independent, regional endorsements, employer sponsorships and business classes.
Under this new arrangement whole concept is managed by automated system. Migrants aspiring to apply for visa now have to complete all formalities at first step itself. Exploring and identifying relevant trade from SOL they want to nominate for their passage down under forms basic criteria. Onus of proving their claims of possessing relevant qualifications for selected trade lies on them. They must get their credentials (educational and employment) verified from relevant agency before they submit their profile for consideration.
Australia Point based assessment – PBS for relevant visas is done simultaneously by system and profile - EOI is ranked accordingly. Regional authorities and employers can access profiles of candidates who opt for such visa arrangements.
