Math can be one of the most difficult subjects for children to grasp. But it is an essential element for any individual to learn in order to succeed in school, and later, a career. To reach the required level of math competency required at any school, sometimes all a child needs is the right type of instruction, or a way to relate the information on his or her own terms. Here are a few ways to give your child’s mathematical skills a boost, and have some fun while you’re at it! 1. Master the basics first. While this step may not be the most fun, it is one of the most fundamentally important steps. Mastering the basics requires lots of drilling and repeating so be prepared. Flash cards are a good medium to get you through this step. You’ll know your child has mastered the basics once they can answer back in three seconds or less. 2. Show them how to go about it. Sometimes kids are so overwhelmed by the thought of having to do math that they just don’t do anything at all. If you teach them how to go about it, it makes their life that much easier. Establish a pattern with them, starting with studying the examples in the textbook or worksheet. Before they get started on their own work, have them complete the examples to make sure they’ve absorbed the lesson. 3. Don’t let words get in the way. The format of math questions can throw some students off. When they see a problem that, in their minds, should just be numbers, in a paragraph or sentence, this may confuse the math issue even further. Help them by encouraging them to read the problem a few times before diving into solving it. Some kids may benefit from visualizing the problem by drawing a picture or diagram beforehand. Learning math can be a fun, however challenging, experience. Online tools are also a wonderful resource for today’s kids struggling to grasp the subject.
