Ajmer - Muslim pilgrim city

Travel & Tourism
Surrounded by the Aravalli Mountains, Ajmer is a famous Muslim pilgrim city for the shrine of the sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin chishti. This place is a holy place for both Hindus and Muslims. The city depicts the secular nature of true India through its life and history. Ajmer, previously known as Ajaimer means 'Invincible Hill' and it was established as a capital by Raja Ajay Pal Chauhan in 7th AD. In 1559 Mughal emperor Akbar conquered Ajmer and after that the town turned into a well known Muslim Pilgrim center. Till 1770 Ajmer was under the rule of Mughal. After that the city faced lot of turn around between Maratha and Mewar. In 1818 the Marathas sold Ajmer to East India Company. Ajmer symbolizes the affluent cultures of Rajasthan which is absorbed from various dynasties like the Mughals, the Scindias, Rajputs and the rulers of the Delhi Sultanate. Ajmer stands for a ethical place of majestic Rajasthan. The city is well known for its traditional handicrafts. Ajmer is considered a trade center for manufactured goods including cotton, wool textiles, leather, hosiery, shoes, soap, and pharmaceuticals. When it comes to shopping, Madar Gate, Chudi Bazzar, Naya Bazzar, Dargah Bazzar, and Kesarganj are quite popular market of this place. Prominent among the places to see in Ajmer are as: The Adhai-Din-Ka-Jhopra, which is a ruined mosque. The interesting story behind the mosque is it was built only in two and half days. It is situated at Ankerkot at the foot of Taragarh hill. Next important monument is Taragarh Fort. It is claimed to be the first hill fort of Asia. The fort demonstrates the detailed Rajasthani Architecture. Another must see place is Soni Ji Ki Nasiyan. This is Digambara Jain temple. The temple is rich in architecture and ancient painting. One of the chambers of the temple is known as the Swarna Nagari. It has many gold lined wooden figures which depicts the characters of the Jain tradition. The Ansagar Lake is another important place to see. This man made lake was constructed by the grand father of Maharaja Prithviraj Chauhan. There is a garden inside the lake which was laid out by Emperor Jahangir between the Lake. There are five pavilions, known as the Baradari, between the garden and the lake. The other important sites are Shah Jahan's Mosque, Mayo College and the most important tourist and religious site Ajmer-e-Sharief. The famous dargah has some of the attractive buildings, tomb and exclusive painting of Mughal style inside the fence. It is considered as ornament of the city.
