Put Your Time In Where You Want to See Results Leave It to Beaver, The Andy Griffith Show, Father Knows Best, The Golden Girls, The Cosby Show and Family Affair make up a small subset of my all-time TV favorites. I grew up watching these shows faithfully and by any means necessary, that is fighting for my space in front of the television given the number of children that grew up in my family’s household. Now that I am much older and most of these shows are in syndication, I still surf the TV or Web in hope that I might stumble across an episode that I had never seen. However, I'd be just as content with the reruns that I have seen countless times in the event that none new to me was airing. While watching one of these shows, a thought came to me. Evaluate how much time you spend watching these same shows over and over again and compare your findings to how much time you spend, writing articles, writing the books you said you would someday write, creating the music you said you would create, and the list goes on. So, the number averaged about 15 hours per week of watching and/or having the shows play in the background while I did other things around the house. Here's what really got me--the afterthought--these people have lived their dream and many continue to live their dream of showing up our homes every day. And, we pay for them to show up every time. Research indicates that in order to master anything, on average it takes 10,000 hours minimally giving yourself to the task, effort, endeavor or whatever you want to call it. Given my numbers, all I had was a good thought to say the least. Consistently fueling my passions was approaching an almost-20-year delay, and there was no one I could blame except me. If I got discouraged because of what others had to say or had done to me, it was my fault that the delay continued because of my personal choice to sit and wait for someone else to make things happen for me. Stuff does not just happen. We have the power to change the course of our lives through the power of our words and how we invest our time. Given this new revelation of how I was wasting this precious gift called time, I turned the corner. My passions are alive and well nourished. The first book is published. My piano skills have increased. My internal joy has escalated as a result. So, in addition to my day job, my post-day job includes sharing my practice sessions online at http://www.playpiano-now.com and sharing simple truths for daily living at http://www.simpletruthsministries.com. I am writing more, and I am creating music/songs again. Here’s what I know, as we change our confession and make time for our interests and passions, our situations change, and we find ourselves closer to our goals one step at a time. Stuff doesn’t just happen. You have to participate in the process. Dr. Jackie Golden is helping people by sharing simple truths based on biblical principles and real-world experiences.
