To understand what happened as a result of these updates then we must look at them separately. The Panda update is actually an update dealing with content and targeting sites which had duplicated content and spammers that tend to scrape content. Thus is any sites were loaded up with duplicate content they had their share of troubles. The Penguin update targeted many assorted factors among which were low quality links. The purpose behind this was to catch excessive spammers however along with this some legal sites and SEOs were caught by this update as well. The Penguin algo seems to be looking over several major factors among which are is a certain website’s back links are low quality or look spammy, if a majority of the back links are from unrelated sites and if there were too many links which pointed back to a site that had the same exact match keywords in the anchor texts. It appears that Penguin hasn’t affected sites which have a better combination of natural looking links and low-quality links. There were websites which lost their search rankings on Google due to specific keywords during the Panda and Penguin updates. If your site happens to have been affected by the Penguin updates one of the things you can do is check how many links you have from unrelated sites and delete them. Check and see how many keyword links you have coming into your site and do some variation on your keywords as well as mix your brand name and URL into these links. You should use extra caution if you happen to be doing sponsored links in this case make sure to cancel or remove any links from footers. Do these changes gradually not all at once and then see if your rankings come back. Keep in mind that Penguin will run only periodically like Panda so it may take some weeks before changes come in. If you happen to be doing your own SEO and are new at this you may prefer to try SEOMoz or Majestic SEO which both offer limited free analysis which can be of help to you. If you happen to be using an SEO firm then you should ask them for a detailed link report so that you can see how your SEO firm is helping you. It is important that working with an SEO firm you are aware of what they are doing in your favor and that nothing is happening which Google may not like. You have to be careful at all times otherwise as new updates relating to Panda and Penguin come in you can be badly affected. There is a lot of information online from which you can see what you need to do in order to make your website rank in the top ten.
