By now, most of us know that a low GI diet can help you to lose weight, but what you may find surprising is the fact that it can help your skin to look younger, firmer, and healthy. This diet can promote younger skin that won’t match your age.

GI is short for glycemic index and in simple terms, it means that any food you eat will be low on this index. The GI index is simply a measurement that can tally the speed in which the food in your body is turned into sugar. You want to eat food that will take a long time to break down in your body and you want food that will turn into sugar at a very slow rate.

For the GI diet, the best foods to eat will be on the low end of the GI scale. The higher levels of GI means that these foods will break down quickly, be converted into sugar at a fast rate, and you will be hungry again in a short amount of time. When healthy food is eaten, it has an added benefit of promoting healthy skin and body.

A diet high in GI will raise your blood sugar, which will lead to a rise in your body’s insulin. This is a big problem as this hormone can cause you to gain weight. It can seem very complex but it is actually very easy to follow the low GI diet. Just take notes, read labels and do some research to find out what is low and what is high in GI.

The next time you have breakfast, bypass the cold breakfast cereal. A large majority of these breakfast foods contain a high amount of GI. If you do want cereal, try the hot variety. For instance, oatmeal can be a good substitute because it does not contain any sugars. You can add nuts and even nonfat milk and boiled eggs to round out your meal.

At lunch time, you can also have an easy time making substitutes. Instead of a hamburger, you can try a veggie burger and ask for it to be served on a bun made of whole wheat. White bread is high on the GI scale because it’s high in sugar. You can also have a salad, but pass on French fries unless they are made from new, healthy potatoes.

You can also have a good time with dinner. You can grill different types of meat, vegetables and add a side salad in a short amount of time. Instead of the usual white rice, you can substitute basmati rice because it is low in GI. Use a salad in place of garlic bread, which is also high in GI.

Having a snack, can keep you from feeling hungry and over eating or eating the wrong food on the high GI scale. Have a fruit or vanilla yogurt instead of cakes, cookies and biscuits. Yogurt is the perfect snack because of its ability to slow the absorption of carbs due to the fact that it is high in protein.

So there you have it.

Eating food on the low end of the GI scale is very easy to do and your skin and body will be healthier than it has been in years. You will not be starving yourself on the low GI diet and that is one of the reasons that it is a great diet to stick with.
