Many people are enjoying the benefits of good vision without having to wear contact lenses or glasses because of Lasik eye surgery. Because Lasik eye surgery costs have gone down significantly, it is now more affordable than ever before. Even the newest procedure, Epilasik, costs about the same as the traditional Lasik surgery. The side effects of Lasik eye surgery are virtually non-existent although the patient may experience blurred vision for a few days. This surgical procedure is considered to be very safe and it is FDA approved. Only 3% of all patients who have Lasik surgery have had complications. Lasik eye surgery is recommended for those with myopia, astigmatism and hyperopia, whether they are nearsighted or farsighted. Many Lasik surgery clinics offer free consultations. The patient will be asked for his or her medical history including medications they are taking and any allergies they may have. Those who wear contact lenses will be asked to stop wearing them for a week before the surgery and they will also be instructed to not wear any facial lotion or make up. During surgery the patient will be mildly sedated, the eye will be cleaned to prevent infection, and the eye will be held open with a speculum. A ring is placed over the eye and pressure is applied to create a suction to the cornea. A microkeratome is used to create a flap which is folded back to reveal the epithelial tissue. Using an excimer laser, the specialist vaporizes the tissue to prevent any damage, the tissue is reconstructed and the flap is replaced. There are certain precautions the patient must take after the surgery. The patient must not rub their eyes to prevent damage to the cornea even though they may feel like there is sand in their eyes. A nighttime shield must be worn while sleeping for the first few days, possibly even a week after surgery. Vision will be blurred but will clear up within a few days. Driving can be resumed after a week, although the specialist may ask that contact sports be avoided for some time after. The patient must return to the Lasik surgery clinic for all scheduled appointments. Epilasik surgery differs from Lasik eye surgery because the specialist uses a different instrument than those who perform Lasik surgery. This specialist uses an epithelial separator to separate the epithelial sheet from the cornea, it is then folded and moved out of the way. An excimer laser is used to remodel the tissue and the flap is placed back over the cornea. The specialist places a high-DK contact lens in the eye to hold the flap in place while it heals. The contact lens is removed within a few days when the healing process is complete. Normal activities can resume within a week as the vision becomes clear. It is very important that a protective shield be worn at night and all follow up appointments be kept.
