Enlightenment can't be found by staying only at the best resort in Bali, or by asking an old man for your fortune. It can be found by learning more about the place and its culture. And what better way to know more about the island than by visiting its many art galleries and museums? Here are 5 top options: Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) Established by Agung Rai, this museum features a great mix of works from foreign and local artists in its collection. These include pieces from Arie Smit, Rudolph Bonnet, Affandi, Hendra Gunawan, and more. Attached to one of the many romantic hotels in Bali, ARMA is operated by a foundation with the same name, which trains children from impoverished families into dancers and musicians. Museum Puri Lukisan The first private art gallery on the island, it was established in 1954 by Dutch painter Rudolf Bonnet, predating many of the hotels or villas in Ubud, Bali. With the aim of preserving prime examples of Balinese art, its collection features a wide range of works from Wayang style paintings from the 13th century, to those from Pita Maha period of the 1930s. Blanco Renaissance Museum Opened in 1999, it is one of the few museums that primarily revolve around the collection of one artist, the “fabulous” Don Antonio Blanco. Born in Manila, educated in New York, and an avid traveler in his youth, Blanco was one of the first artists to settle on the island. The museum, housed in his estate, features hundreds of his works, as well as his son's. Museum Rudana An offshoot of an art gallery opened in the 1970's owned by Nyoman Rudana, this museum was formally opened in 1995, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Indonesian independence. Designed to teach visitors about traditional and modern Balinese art, it features pieces like the Episodes from the Ramayana (1880), to Kecak Dance (1994) by I Nyoman Ridi. Neka Art Museum This museum not only features the works of Balinese artists – it also has various works of foreign artists, who were inspired by the island. Internationally recognized, the Neka Art Museum includes works from various periods, such as classical puppet-style paintings to contemporary pieces by young artists. These are only 5 of the most popular museums in Ubud – there are several more in the area, plus countless art galleries. So, spare a day or two for these, even if it means going away from the best resort in Bali, for you'll surely miss a lot if you don't.
