8 Things You Don't Know About Toothpaste

Health,Advice,Home Improvement
Oral hygiene is very important but there are thousands of products that promise to make your teeth white, strong, and cavity-free. How are you even supposed to know what works best when there is such a rich variety of products – I remember that a while ago it took me nearly 30 minutes to decide what toothpaste to pick. Now that I am little bit more educated in oral hygiene I don't have such difficulties but we are sure that there is still a lot of confusion out there and people blindly choose products that are just marketed better than others. Without further ado, here are 8 things you don't know about toothpaste that you probably should!

1. Fluoride is what you need. With so many ingredients, it is hard to keep track of what is important. And when it comes to toothpaste, fluoride is the key ingredient. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, brushing with a toothpaste that contains fluoride twice a day can reduce tooth decay with 40%. The only downside is that tooth decay is unstoppable – no way you can prevent it.

2. Sometimes, less is more! It doesn't matter what you see on commercials or what is the recommended quality of toothpaste per one brushing – a brush with half the amount of toothpaste that is usually recommended will clean your teeth just as good. A pea-size amount of toothpaste on your brush is enough. Not only that you will clean your teeth effectively but you won't have to buy a new tube any time soon.

3. How you brush your teeth is more important than what products you use. Even if you own the best brush and toothpaste available on the market, you won't accomplish anything if you don't know how to brush your teeth the right way. Positioning the brush at a 45 degree angle so that you can get the bristles in between gums and teeth is the proper way of brushing. Moving the brush with small circular motion will get you better results. Keep doing this for at least a minute or two.

4. Organic toothpaste can be effective as any other. Choosing to go green is actual not a bad idea. Usually, organic toothpastes are a little bit more expensive but they can get you good protection as well. Organic toothpaste that contain fluoride are preferable because they do not contain preservatives, dyes and sweeteners.

5. What your toothpaste contains may shock you. If you don't have any further knowledge in chemistry than what high schools usually teach, you probably don't have any idea what the names on the ingredients list mean. But did you know that some toothpastes contain seaweed and detergents. According to specialists, a lot of toothpastes contain mineral and seaweed colloids that are common thickening agents. The foaming effect comes from detergents like sodium dodecyl sulphate (which is a common ingredient in many shampoos and body washes).

6. Pastes and gels – they are all the same. You have heard on TV that one product is better than another but according to the experts they all do the job equally well. Other than texture, flavour and how it makes you feel – there just aren't any major differences as long as you get your fluoride. Pick your favourite product and use it as long as it encourages you to brush... but change it once in a while because...

7. Bacteria can adapt to your toothpaste. Bacteria, germs, and all sorts of unsanitary agents live in our mouths. Specialists claim that the mouth is among the dirtiest parts of the human body (maybe even the dirtiest). By brushing your teeth, you are able to keep the bacteria count to a minimum but if you use the same product for too long the little monsters will adapt. That is why you should change the brand of toothpaste you're using each month or so. By the way, this goes for all toiletries (soap, shampoo, body wash, and so on). Change the brand of your toiletries each month!

8. Whitening toothpaste works... at least to a certain point There are gazillion of products that promise to make your teeth as white as Santa Claus' beard but do they really deliver? The only time I've seen my teeth perfectly white was after a tartar cleaning session by my dentist. Toothpastes contain abrasive particles that help with removing stains from the surface of the teeth. However. Whitening toothpastes contain particles that are shaped considerably better for this particular task. Using such a paste will whiten your teeth a little bit but don't expect miracles. These products do not contain any bleaching agents and won't get you results similar to professional whitening treatments.

Well, I sure hope that this article was informative and it will give you a brighter picture on oral hygiene. I am Jessie Pinkman and I am a former cleaning technician, I used to work for a professional cleaning company cleaners Wapping but I graduated and now I am a dentist. I hope that you will find my articles interesting.
