The Florida Chamber of Commerce honored 41 Republican lawmakers andthree Democrats from among the state s 160 legislators for supportof the business advocacy group s agenda in the 2012 regularsession. Top honors went to House Speaker Dean Cannon , R-Winter Park, named the 2012 Most Valuable Legislator and Rep. Chris Dorworth , R-Lake Mary, given the Chairman s Award, in an announcementreleased by the chamber on Tuesday. The MLV is the chamber s premier award, honoring a single lawmakerfor leadership on free enterprise issues. Speaker Cannon is a champion of free enterprise and understandsgovernment doesn t create jobs -- government creates the rightenvironment for the private-sector to create jobs, AnthonyConnelly, Florida Chamber chairman and senior vice president, andCFO of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, stated in a release.
The chamber noted that Dorworth, as chairman of the HouseRulemaking & Regulation Subcommittee, improved the state sbusiness environment by eliminating 270 duplicative and antiquatedregulations. His leadership will enable businesses to continue to create newjobs for Floridians, and it is my honor to name him the recipientof this year s Chairman s Award, Connelly stated in therelease. During the 2012 legislative session, lawmakers passed 22 FloridaChamber-backed pro-business, pro-jobs bills and defeated dozens ofanti-business bills. These awards are issued on top of the chamber's annual report card , which also gave higher marks to the GOP members. Others honored Tuesday: Florida Senate: Sen.
J.D. Alexander , R-Lake Wales: Championed several Florida Chamber-backedpriorities and sponsored legislation that significantly reducesassessments on homeowner and business insurance policies in theaftermath of a major hurricane. He also developed and passed apro-jobs balanced budget without raising taxes and fees onbusinesses. Sen.
Ellyn Bogdanoff , R-Fort Lauderdale: Sponsored Florida Chamber-backed unemploymentcompensation legislation saving Florida s job creators $549million over two years. Sen. Anitere Flores , R-Miami: Sponsored Florida Chamber-supported legislation thatallows certain funds from plans participating in the state smanaged care program to help fund graduate medical educationinstitution residency programs, and she prevented the FloridaChamber-opposed E-Verify mandate from coming up in committee. Sen. LizBeth Benacquisto , R-Fort Myers: Sponsored a significant Florida Chamber-backededucation bill to expand the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship Programto provide more children with private scholarships to qualityeducation programs.

Nancy Detert , R-Venice: Sponsored Florida Chamber-backed legislation creating astatewide Environmental Resource Permit Rule with singlepoint-of-entry into Florida s environmental permitting process,which reduces the cost of doing business in Florida whileprotecting our valuable environment. She also championedlegislation that would have helped level the playing field forFlorida s small businesses by closing the Internet-only sales taxloophole while remaining revenue-neutral. Sen.
