Digha is a famous sea side tourist destination of West Bengal. It is known as a seaside resort town. Geographically this place is located in th eeast Midnapore district and at the northern end of the Bay of Bengal. It is a popular sea resort and well explored by huge tourists every year. It is a well visited weekend destinations for the surroundings areas. It is 183 km far from kolkata, the capital city of West Bengal. According to history, the place was known as Beerkul before. First this place was discovered by the British in 18th century when it was distinctly mentioned as ‘Brighton of the east’ by Warren Hastings, the first Governor-General of India. The place became well marked when an English tourist John Frank Smith started staying there in 1923 and due his treatise this place has got its fame. The place offers a relaxing scenic beauty with sun kissed beach lined with casuarina trees. There are many untouched and less explored beaches located nearby. Most important the beach is safe for various marine activities like swimming, scuba diving, jet ski-ing and surfing. The Udaipur Beach and the Shankarpur Beach are quite famous and worthy to visit for its eye soothing charming view.Junpat is annother place which is known as fishing spot and 40 km far from Digha. Marine Aquarium and Research Center, Subarnareskha River, Talsari, and Lord Shiva Temple. The place boasts of the largest aquarium in India. Mandarmani Beach are some well visited place. Among them Mandarmani Beach is a beautiful place with exquisite charm, tranquil beauty with solacing vista. The Subarnareskha Delta is another place and known as a good picnic spot. In short, Digha is a visual treat for the tourists with relaxing accommodations and overwhelming beach side beauty. Seaside food specially various dishes of fish are quite available here. Bengali is predominant language of this place where Hindi is also frequently used here. Kolkata airport is the closest airport of this place. The airport is well connected with the major places of india. Digha Railway station is connected with Howrah and Kharagpur. By bus services this place is well linked with the surrounding places. The place experiences a tropical climate with three main season like summer, monsoon and winter. Sunmmers are hot and humid and monsoons are not so enjoyable as most of outdoor activities are restricted this time. So October and November is the ideal time to visit this place with mild and comfortable weather. The entire stretch of the Digha seaface from Old Digha to New Digha is filled with casuarinaplantations, which looks beautiful. Tourists come here and bath in the sea, stroll by the beach along the casuarina trees and enjoy the sights and scenes offered by this magnificent stretch of sea. Subarnarekha River: The salty place where Subarnarekha River draining into Bay of Bengal, only 12 km away from Digha, located in Orissa-Bengal border. This is a new destination for Digha tourists.
