By Philip Walzer The Virginian-Pilot May 27, 2012 Meet the Chladny family from Macungie, Pa., outside Allentown. Nanette, 60, is about to retire as a middle school German teacher.Ed, also 60, works as a heating and air conditioning technician. They visited the Oceanfront on a whim in 1991 and have been backevery summer since, always staying at The Breakers Resort Inn. The first time, they came with their two daughters. Their entouragehas grown to eight, including three girls and a son-in-law. Here'sNanette on how the Beach stacks up with the Jersey Shore, theirfavorite restaurants and attractions and their only gripe: Why did you first visit? "We spent a couple of days in Williamsburg in 1991. At the endof the vacation, we said, 'Let's drive to Virginia Beach and seewhat it's like.' We fell in love with it." What's so great about the Oceanfront? "It has a wonderful family atmosphere. The beach is muchcleaner than the Jersey Shore. We like the fact that the games andshops are behind the Boardwalk. You're not really bothered by allof that. You can just sit on a bench or on the beach." How many miles do you drive - and by what route - to get here? "360 miles. We go through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. Welove that. My husband used to work for Bethlehem Steel, and thatwas a big part of building the bridge." What's your household income? "We're a little bit above" the Oceanfront's summeraverage of $92,982. How much do you spend when you're here? About $3,000 (significantly more than the $1,969 average for atourist family). What do you like most about the Beach? "Everywhere you want to shop and eat, you can walk to it. Weeven enjoy it when the storms come up. We sit on the balcony andwatch them." Any peeves? "The crowds and the traffic do seem to get a little crazy atnight. We're old. We stay in our hotel after 10 o'clock." Where do you like to eat? "The restaurant that we always visit is Isle of Capri. I liketo try their veal and seafood dishes. My husband likes to go toBlack Angus. He's a steak eater. The little cafe in the Breakershotel, the Boardwalk Cafe, is fabulous, and the price is right.Their chef makes home fries to die for. He gave us a little bit ofthe seasoning, but we couldn't replicate it. And we love Kohr Bros.(frozen custard). We go there every night. We always put weighton." Any other must visits? "Flipper McCoys. We're a gaming family. I'm the skee ballqueen of the family. My husband likes the pinball machines." What's your favorite place to visit besides the beach? "I'd have to say Norfolk. I know down there they sayKnow-foke, but we say Nor-foke. It's a short trip, and there'salways a lot to see and do. We did the Spirit of Norfolk cruise. We've done tours of the naval base. The USS Wisconsin - my husbandsays people don't talk that up enough. It's part of ourhistory." What about Williamsburg or the Outer Banks? "We've done Williamsburg twice. We both enjoy history. But forone reason or another, we weren't impressed. It seems like we mighthave missed something. ... We've been to the Outer Banks once. It'stotally different from Virginia Beach. It's really laid-back;there's less to do. We like Virginia Beach better.".
