Greek Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA)leader Alexis Tsipras vowed on Friday to annul the twointernational bailout deals for the debt-ridden country. "The bailout deal is an automatic pilot to utter disaster ... Weask people's vote to annul the terms of bailout agreements,"Tsipras said, presenting the party's economic agenda in Athensahead of the national elections due on June 17. Tsipras pledged to renegotiate "the debt at European level, aimingto drastically reduce it, or a debt moratorium and a suspension ofinterest payments until conditions for the stabilization andrecovery of the economy are created." He also promised to gradually reduce VAT rates, starting from basicfood products and the tourism industry, increasing the tax burdenfor the most wealthy, such as ship owners. Regarding the banking sector, structural reforms and theprivatization program, SYRIZA intends to nationalize Greek banksthat receive recapitalization from the Greek Financial StabilityFund, keep strategic public companies under state control and stopthe sale of significant public assets. Proponents of a milder review of the bailout deals that keep Greeceafloat with multi-billion rescue loans, led by conservative NewDemocracy (ND) leader Antonis Samaras, argued that unilateralannulment will cause strong reactions and most certainly lead to aGreek default and exit from the euro zone. ND and SYRIZA that ranked first and second with about 19 percentand 17 percent of votes in the May 6 elections, have beenneck-and-neck in the latest opinion polls. All recent surveys indicate no party will win absoluteparliamentary majority, as happened in the first round, forcingcoalition partnerships to form a government.
