The ever increasing use of mobile devices to access the internet is having significant knock-on effects when it comes to the amount of pure data that is being generated minute by minute in real time. The willingness for commercial entities to embrace the new paradigms means that 'data mining' is the new digital gold rush and the need to stay on top of the flood of new information coming in from all sources is becoming a major concern for many businesses. 'Big Data' is the latest buzzword aimed at describing the way in which information about purchases, web searches and general consumer profiling is influences the way companies target their products and services. It isn't just client-generated data that is growing in volume though. The entire day to day workings of most businesses now take place in the digital realm and the demands on storage capabilities have increasing exponentially as a result. Device explosion The explosion in the use of handheld devices such as smartphones and tablets, along with the introduction of 4G and next generation mobile systems, means the amount of data in not going to decrease. No one has any genuine estimates of how quickly it will continue to grow but it is indisputable that sizeable increases will be experienced. The whole concept of 'cloud computing' has a huge part to play when it comes to painting a picture of where things are going. When major players such as Microsoft base their new software around the idea that people will use 'non local' services more than licensed or owned software packages in the future it is a sure sign that data transfers will be increasing in more ways than the simple internet interactions of today. Server dominance Installing server racks is becoming more common in smaller companies which might have used the services of an off-site contractor up until now. The ability to maintain an in-house server system has become increasingly easy with the introduction of new component technologies that reduce both noise and power consumption. This is in addition to new designs in cabinets and housings which make ergonomic sense in a smaller office environment. Companies like Tough Rack are leading the way when it comes to producing equipment that is suitable for a wide range of applications, with enough flexibility to allow clients at all stages of development to build their own set ups. As demand for server cabinets, racks and housings continue to rise, flexibility in construction design is increasingly important in order to give the widest customer base the ability to take advantage of the IT solutions an in-house system can offer. To put the amount of data that is currently being generated into some kind of perspective, consider all the videos that are uploaded and viewed on YouTube each day, the volume of music downloaded across the world through iTunes stores and the amount of basic data generated by email communications in business, governmental and personal use every minute of every day. Although it can be reasonably expected that new forms and methods of data collation and collection will emerge in coming years, and that new ways of storing, accessing and analysing this data will come to light, at the moment taking advantage of contemporary server storage solutions is the most viable solution – and one accessible to all users.
