Bars and clubs offer a wide array of interesting jobs to suit different preferences and skill. Most positions require good communication skills and a pleasing personality. If you had always wanted to be a part of a bar staff, here are some professions you can try: - Bar managers- The task of a bar manager is to oversee the operations of a bar. He is responsible for hiring (as well as firing) staff members, training and motivating them, and making work schedules. He also orders supplies like food, alcohol, paper goods (like cocktail napkins), etc. and see to it that the alcohol is in good condition. They also enforce health and safety rules to be followed in the bar. In some bars, they also play the role of host/hostess in important gatherings.
- Bartenders- The bartenders work behind the bar and possess extensive skill in drink serving. They bartenders prepare and dispense cocktails and also non- alcoholic drinks. Bartenders need specialized schooling and a sound knowledge about different types of alcoholic drinks. They should also be familiar with the local and state laws about alcohol serving. Sometimes, they will also have to wash plates and glasses and be responsible for keeping the bar premises clean.
- Chefs- Chefs are responsible for making delicious food in the bar. The type of food to prepare can range from short- order items like chicken wings and hamburgers to high- end cuisines like a full meal, such as filet mignon. During busier periods, the cooks are under a lot of pressure to keep pace with the high volume of orders.
- Bouncers- If you have always been that tough guy and like fighting and boxing (for a good reason), bouncers can be a good option for you. Being positioned near the entrance they are also known as doormen and are responsible for supervising the customers entering the bar. They check whether the person has reached the legal age of drinking or has adhered to the dress code (if any). Bouncers need to have strong physical stature, with well developed muscles and good physical fitness as they have to often intervene with unruly drunken customers.
- Entertainer-You can showcase your talent in a bar and become a great entertainer. But entertainment does not generally feature in a bar on a regular basis, mostly featuring in weekends. Common entertainers include comedians, disc jockeys and band. These can be part time or full time jobs. Some entertainers may receive only tips from audiences and nothing from the bar’s management. Sometimes even the entertainer pays to the bar for performing in order to gain popularity.
- Waiters- The job of waiters (also known as servers) is to wait on tables and take food and drinks orders. Once the chef or the bartender fills the orders, he delivers them to the customers. They are also responsible for transacting the sale when the customers are done with their meal and are ready to pay. In many cases, they might have to clean the table when a customer leaves. Waiters should have a good knowledge about the food and drink prepared in the bar, along with the ingredients used to prepare them so that they can convey the same to customers who are interested in knowing. Waiters should be well behaved and have a pleasing persona and good communication skills.
