Recently when I have gone out to Houston nightclub events, as I am going in I listen in on the conversations of people who happen to be leaving. This way I can pick up anything that might be going on that I don’t want to be involved in or if there is something that I really want to check out. One thing I have heard a lot of lately is people saying “that is sick” as they come outside. For a while I wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. Then I went to one nightclub show that helped me make up my mind. |
The name of the act was simply Conundrum. I wasn’t sure if it was a band or what, but it sounded like it was going to be interesting, so I figured I would check it out. As I was walking in, I heard people saying it was sick, but I wasn’t sure what they meant.
Over time, the meaning of the word has changed a bit so it covers a few things .naturally, one way to look at it is that whatever is going on is somewhat depraved and unusual. Recently though, the meaning has also come to encompass something that is really cool or awesome. So how was I to know what the difference would be when I entered?
I quickly found out. It seems Conundrum was basically like some kind of freak show. It started out simply enough with a man who would swallow fire. No harm in that and it looked kind of cool. So far there was no problem at all.
The fire-eater then called the Conundrum out on stage. He was a big bald man with no shirt, lots of tattoos and lots of piercings. He then proceeded to start eating things like screws, nails, tin cans and more. A lot of people in the crowd made noise, but the worst was yet to come.
He then took a hammer and nail and nailed it into the inside of his nose. I couldn’t even watch it when he did it because I was too squeamish. All you heard were moans and groans from the audience as he went on until he was finished.
He then started to hang some heavy things from the piercings on his nipples. At this point I had pretty much seen enough. I left my beer right at the bar and turned and walked out the door.
I heard people saying this was sick as I was leaving, and I couldn’t agree more, but maybe not in the same way they did. All I can say is that type of Houston nightlife entertainment is not for me, but a lot of people stayed for the whole show. The Conundrum had promised to eat a muffler off a Chevy truck later on.
