The news that classic 1980s computer game Elite is to be given new life thanks to crowd-funding over the internet will be received warmly by many aging gamers. Ask any of the game’s original fans what they remember from its first incarnation and it’s likely to be one thing more than any other. The names of the spaceships were all snakes. The player starts his adventures in a Cobra Mk III. He seeks out the heavy pythons which are strong but easy to out-manoeuvre and destroy. But if he was having a bad day he might end up with several wedge-shaped police vipers on his tail. Oops! He’s wishing now that he hadn’t picked up that mid-space cargo pod that turned out to have slaves inside. No fair! As the new version is now being developed we hope to see a revival of all those Mambas, Kraits and Sidewinders. But for a literal sting in the tail, who could forget what it felt like to be chased through a Feudal star system with several serpent-named bad guys behind you? It’s moments like that that make you realise that Indiana Jones might have had a fear of legless fork-tongued creatures, but didn’t he have it easy? After all, all he had to do to escape a situation was flick his whip. We suspect that when Elite: Dangerous hits the shelves next year, we won’t have it so easy. From Deadly to Elite and back to Dangerous again
