Obesity is becoming a problem for more and more people. But still by many people it is considered to be less serious than it really is. For us it seems to be clear how people gain weight, and most people think that they know how to lose it. But numerous surveys show that pretty much that we "know" about obesity and weight loss is kind of wrong. Here let's start with some things that are probably not very pleasant but true. It is sad to realize that more than a third of Americans are obese, when even many more are overweight. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tried to estimate the cost of obesity-related medical problem and it managed to get some results. For example, in 2008 the sum was almost $150 billion. Then for an average person who was obese the cost in health related expensed happened to be more than $1,400, which was without taking in consideration count the physical, mental or quality-of-life toll that obesity can levy on a person. People continue to dispute that something needs to be done about this problem. And there are plenty of experts (present company included) who can help with advice and recommendation concerning what has to be done. There is the sad truth that lots of those turn out to be mistaken. Aaron Carroll, an expert in weight loss issue used to tell people that making small, sustained lifestyle changes can be really helpful for losing weight over time. But it turns out that when people are doing such changes they expect much more weight loss than it is possible. Walking a mile every day even for five years just can't bring considerable results. People consider eating breakfast to be a good idea when you're trying to lose weight, as it is believed to keep them from binging later. But according to studies, there's no protective effect from eating breakfast at all. Also people say that eating more fruits and vegetables is a great way to lose weight. But how can it be possible when there are no magic fruits and vegetables in nature. The studies show that eating more of fruits and vegetables without any other behavioral changes just can't result any weight loss. There is also myth that snacking between meals can lead to weight gain. But studies again don't show that there are such cases. There is nothing bad about healthy snacking outside of usual meal times. And how much more of such things which are not that right and which we continue to believe? Don't we know anything about the issue at all? Let's go back to studies and say that they state possibility of absolute overcoming genetic and familial factors to lose weight. The studies show that significant physical activity can help everyone with weight loss, as well as there is one more pleasant bonus of making healthier in general. Sure physical activities should go along with reducing caloric intake to achieve results in weight loss. If one has to change his or her overall eating habits, the amounts of consumed food just must be normalized. Getting the whole family involved is important and desirable.
