Carpenter ant is one of the dangerous species of ants. They destroy wood like termite. But they do not eat wood as food; they do it for making nest. They create tunnels inside wood for making nest and make the wood very weak. They destroy huge amount of wood every year. Moist and rotten woods are ideal for making nest to carpenter ant. And all this are available in the year of human's house. For this carpenter ant always get necessary food for their existence form human's property. For this they always be attracted by humans house. In order to protect your precious wooden furniture from these pests, you had to take up necessary action. The carpenter ants, like termites, do not survive on wood, but they dig through the wood in order to make a tunnel and also for setting up their nest. These ants might also dig a tunnel in the trunk of your tree in the garden and if the trunk is rather soft, then it might kill the tree too. These ants mainly survive on sweets, or feed on other small insects, but never on wood. Depending upon the size of the hive you have to decided how to protect them from destroying your property. In such a situation you will have to identify the hive location. Carpenter ant be very active form the evening to midnight. You have to find out them during that period. They do not see yellow light, so you should cover your flashlight with a yellow paper. After identifying the hive position, you have to choose the technique of destroying the entire hive. But before attaching to the hive you have to know something very important and that is you have to identify the queen and kill first. Because, if the queen be able to escape and stay alive then it will boost the rate of breeding for minimizing the loss. Then the problem of carpenter ant's attack increase couples of time. So, be careful about this issue. You can destroy the hive manually. Enlarge the opening of the nest and pour hot of very cold water into the nest. Make sure that the nest be over flooded. Getting rid of this ants is tough but possible. Calling the pest control would be a good idea, but there are other simple means too by which you can get rid of these ants, naturally and without spending much money. Here are some steps you can follow. * The first thing one has to do while trying to either get rid of these carpenter ants or control them, is attacking the nest and for that you have to find out where the nest is. * For this you have to follow the worker ants. Leave some honey or something sweet outside, specially during the nighttime as these ants are more active during that time, and when these ants catch the bait, instead of killing them, follow them to their nest. Guys! For this you need PATIENCE and this might take you days or sometimes even months. * Now when you find the nest, say behind a tile or in between walls, spray boric acid powder on it. This is guaranteed to kill all the ants in the nest. * When you find the nest, do not try and spray the usual pesticides or insecticides that you use to kill cockroaches or other pests. Instead you can use the termite spray to get rid of the ants or you can try out some of the ant repellent sprays that are available in the market. * DO NOT spray on those ants who are outside the nest as they will lead you to their nest. And also be careful while spraying boric acid on the nest that have been made near the electrical wires as one tiny mistake might give you an electrical shock.
