Green lipped mussel powder is gaining increasing recognition and popularity due to being a natural food source for omega-3 essentially fatty acids, which is a nutrient that is known to inhibit and reduce inflammation. Excess inflammation is responsible, at least in part, for many illnesses and health conditions. These include heart disease, along with joint problems and arthritis, as those that are most prevalent. Having a way to decrease, or even prevent this, that is also from a natural food, would be a very good thing – reducing inflammation, and relieving joint pain are the primary known benefits for green lipped mussel powder. Anti-Inflammation Medicines And Side Effects There are numerous drugs and medicines that have anti-inflammatory properties, after all the pharmaceutical industry is a multi-billion dollar business. Certainly, if I have a serious health problem, then I need to take the appropriate medicine. And I am going to take my occasional Advil for a bad headache. But what about all the possible side effects, especially like bleeding and stomach problems from anti-inflammation medicines, that are taken over long periods of time – without carefully monitoring for additional problems? Many millions of dollars [it is actually estimated to be in the low billions] are spent each year to treat the complications that NSAIDs cause. Let’s consider a few things that I have found: (1) It is estimated that there are over 70 million prescriptions written for anti-inflammatory drugs each year. (2) One of these drugs Vioxx, which later had to be taken off the market, was estimated by a drug researcher from the FDA to have caused around 100,000 serious heart problems like heart attacks and strokes. (3) NSAIDs or aspirin – take 2 and call me in the morning – are prescribed or recommended for most any ache and pain. Except these have known side effects causing bleeding and other gastrointestinal problems – which is serious enough that these medicines, regardless of whether they are prescription or over-the-counter, now come with black box warnings. (4) Many physicians have been found to be unaware of the side effects and complications from anti-inflammatory medicines. Getting Into Natural Anti-Inflammatories I never knew anything about inflammation or natural health and supplements. I didn’t even take a vitamin, and if I ever had something wrong I went to the doctor and took what he gave me. Well, I was one of the lucky guys who took Vioxx, because I had lower back pain that was called minor arthritis. The medicine wasn’t going to cure anything [there is no cure for arthritis] but ideally it would reduce the inflammation and help with the pain – I can’t say that it helped, but I wanted to try something. A few years later, I had to go to the hospital from a 911 call for my heart - I had atrial fibrillation. Was it all from the few years Vioxx, I have no way of knowing. But the doctor told me it was a condition that I would always have, that would likely get worse as I got older – he also read me the riot act about weight loss, nutrition, and exercise; more on that in a bit. And he also put me on Coumadin because of the risk of ‘throwing a clot’ and having a stroke. Well, talk about a medicine from hell. It has an interaction with most everything, including different foods, and because it can cause serious bleeding problems I had to get a blood test every 2 weeks to monitor its levels. This was 4.5 years ago. Over that time I really got into conditioning and nutrition. I got my weight back where it was before I hurt my back, and was working out 4-5 times a day. This actually helped the back problems; so much for all my crap that I couldn’t do anything because of it. But the working out did cause some different joint related problems – I pretty much ‘trashed’ my elbows from lifting weights, and I of course couldn’t take any NSAIDs because of the Coumadin and bleeding. Omega-3 DHA So, I started doing some research on anything that might help for the joint inflammation and pain. It had to be from a natural food and have no side effects. This is when I learned about omega3-dha, and how highly recommended fish oil was as an anti-inflammatory with usage for joint problems. And even better, the American Heart Association recommended for heart disease and lowering triglycerides and fats in the blood. This was great if I could get multiple benefits that were related to the 2 problems that I had – and I started taking fish oil omega-3 dha supplements each day at a dosage of 3 grams, which was I read as the FDA maximum daily allowance. Green Lipped Mussel Powder Later I learned about the benefits from green lipped mussel powder – it was on the same site as the fish oil omega-3, but I never even noticed it. This supplement also was a very good natural source of omega-3, with its primary benefits being (1) reduction of inflammation (2) relief from joint pain. But green lipped mussel powder was also different than the fish oil omega-3 - the green lipped mussel omega-3 anti-inflammatory properties are exceptionally strong: >A study said it was more powerful because it was found in greater concentration, and even went on to call it a revolution in essential fatty acid supplements. >It was called a ‘whole food’ source that was possibly the most complete that was known. >It contained natural sources of glycosaminoglycans, which included chondroitin and glucosamine sulfates that are specifically used for the management of joint pain. >It contained complex carbohydrates, of which mucopolysaccharides was called ‘the glue of life’ because of their role in metabolism, growth, and aging. Green Lipped Mussel Extract Powder + Fish Oil Omega-3 DHA It was time to add green lipped mussel extract to the fish oil omega-3 supplements. It was a great natural food source, and there could be an increase in the benefits from the combination since they were different. What can I tell you: >Knock on wood I have never had another atrial fibrillation episode. >My cholesterol has gone from 205 to 144, and this is with a 7 point increase in the hdl level. >My cardiologist let me stop taking Coumadin. >I am working out as often and as hard as ever, but the elbow pains haven’t been a problem. Is this all from the inflammation inhibition and reduction properties of omega3-dha and these other nutrients in the supplements? It beats the heck out of me – but I am sure not going to stop taking them to find out if they were the difference. Nutrition Changes For Preventing Middle Age Chronic Inflammation
