Search Engine Optimization or SEO is the technique of creating web pages to catch the attention of Search Engines. A few webmasters believe that search engine optimization is a subdivision of search engine marketing. During the mid nineties website publishers and content writers began optimizing websites for search engines. During that time, the web publisher would offer an URL to search engines and search engines would send a web crawler to them. This web crawler would then dig out links from the WebPages and use the data to index the page, download the page and save it in their servers. After the page was stored on the servers a next program called as an index, would dig out more information within the webpage, analyse the keywords. After all this process was completed the web page was ranked. Almost all the webmasters were clever enough to understand that ranking high in search engines was very useful. Originally search engines would use algorithms which the website owners provided to them. As and when more and more people started exploiting the search engines, they developed more advanced forms of search engine optimization. Search engines built up a system which included various aspects. They included domain name, title text, URL directories, frequency of terms, precedence of keywords, proximity of keywords on page, Alt attributes for images, text which have no frame tags, neighbouring on page keywords, sitemaps of websites, content design and development and sequence of keywords on page, to name a few. By this time Google also developed a latest model of assessing WebPages called Page Rank. Page Ranks gives weight age to a web page’s reputation based on the pages from where the incoming links. Google became very famous by using such search engines optimization means. Most big search engines like Google, Yahoo, and Ask and big do not reveal the algorithms used by them to rank website pages, because of exploitation by webmasters. But some of the things the search engines use today are title keywords, back links, keywords that are used in links which are being pointed to the page, Page Rank, Keyword density and usage in text, links used to connect inner pages etc. Most of the times it is easy to register your webpage or website on a search engine. Google just requires a link from a site which has already been indexed by it and after that the web crawlers will go to that site and start to spider its contents. Usually it takes a few takes for the search engine spiders to visit your website after it has been registered. There are a few search engines which will give you a guarantee of spidering and indexing of your website, but they charge a small fee. But such search engines will not assure you of an accurate ranking. Some website owners will not want their WebPages to be crawled by search engines. They can use the standard robots.txt file. Place the file in the root directory. Seldom will a web crawler still crawl a webpage, even if a website owner has pointed out that he does not want his web page to be indexed by the search engines.
