How to Teach English in Italy

Career,Education,Self Improvement
Among countries that take foreign teachers of English, Italy is one of the most popular. The country is beautiful, rich in history and heritage. There are so many tourist attractions to see, great food that is loved by the entire world, and many historical sites for you to explore during your time in the country. The people are friendly, and you can learn so much about Italian culture. There are, however, a few things that you need to know before pursuing this option.

How difficult would it be for me to obtain an English teaching position in Italy?

Because positions in Italy are among the most coveted, these jobs are relatively pretty difficult to obtain. To start, you can you find English jobs in Italy here but be prepared because there's a great deal of competition, as well as many applicants. Thus, if you really want a teaching position in this country, you should be as qualified as possible and willing to work very hard on your application.

What qualifications do I need for one of these positions?

In order to be an English teacher in Italy, TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certification is required. This certification is relatively easy to get, and it will be extremely difficult for you to be hired without it, particularly in the competitive nations such as Italy. One thing that makes the entire process more difficult for applicants in this case, compared to that of other countries, is that Italy requires a personal interview in order to offer you a teaching job. You will have to sit down with potential employers and actually meet them in person before they're going to consider hiring you; this means that you need to be able to make a trip to Italy for interview purposes.

Are there any visa requirements that I should know about?

If you are from the UK, you don't need a visa sponsorship to teach English in Italy. You just need a permit that will make it possible for you to stay in Italy for three months to look for work. Once you find a job, you will need to be able to present a certificate of employment from your employer. When you apply for a permit to stay in Italy long-term, you will need to bring the certificate with you, in addition to your original work permit. At this point, you will need to apply for a work permit; this will be valid as long as you're employed as an English teacher.

Do I need to be able to speak Italian for one of these positions?

This is not required, but it is generally recommended. If you do not know the language, your best chance would be with jobs at private schools that are managed by other native English speakers.

What kind of salary can I expect with one of these teaching positions?

Salary amounts can vary a great deal. Most people make anywhere between €800 and €1500 per month. However, the cost of living in Italy it is relatively high compared to other countries. In addition, the income tax is fairly high; it can range from 23-43% of your income. Thus, the salary, while enough to live on, is not going to be enough for a luxurious lifestyle. Many teachers opt to take up private tutoring classes as well, in order to supplement their income. Generally, people can reasonably charge €15-€25 for this service.

What is the nature of a typical teaching contract in Italy?

Most teachers will be in contact with students about 20 to 30 hours per week. As with any other country, full-time teaching contracts are rare; this is especially true for Italy, because any teaching position at all is relatively difficult to obtain here. The typical contract length is a year or less, and English teachers typically begin in September or January.

What employer benefits can I expect?

Because these positions are very coveted among applicants, it is rare that employers include many additional benefits. Airfare, accommodations, and housing are rarely included in your package. Holidays are typically paid, however. For foreign residents who had received an Italian identity card, there is required health insurance coverage by the national health service; this amount will be taken out of your paycheck. If you want private insurance, you will have to pay higher costs.
