Identifying asbestos can be difficult because the products that contain asbestos look the same as products that do not. One of the most common places that asbestos can be found is in construction material. Asbestos was used as a construction material for residential and commercial buildings from 1920 to 1986. You can identify likely asbestos products by determining when the construction material was manufactured and used. It's best to assume that asbestos is present if the dates match. Examine the roofing on a home if it was built prior to 1980. If there are multiple layers of shingles on the roof, the original shingles may still be in place. Older asphalt shingles typically will contain some asbestos. Determine when the plaster or finish on the walls in the home was added. Popcorn ceilings in older homes may contain asbestos, depending on the year it was applied. Get a sample from each of the areas that could contain asbestos gathered by a professional if you are not accustomed to collecting asbestos and have them sent for testing. The only sure way to identify asbestos is to go by the date on which the construction material was used. Products that contain asbestos cannot be determined by sight alone. Asbestos is identified, using a microscope, by the fibers in the material. Never try to remove any type of construction material that contains asbestos because you could release asbestos fibers into the air.
