SINGAPORE: It has been billed as the match of the season, with 2012Malaysian Super League (MSL) leaders LionsXII taking on defendingchampions Kelantan in Kota Bharu on Friday night. But pre-match excitement has been marred by security concerns atthe Stadium Sultan Mohammad IV, whose fans have a history ofviolent behaviour. Kelantan Football Association (KAFA) general-secretary and teammanager Azman Ibrahim has already given assurances that theLionsXII and their travelling fans will be safe in thenorth-eastern Malaysian state and that there will be adequatesecurity during the match. LionsXII team manager Eugene Loo said players will be briefed notto wander unnecessarily outside their hotel. "Nothing reallyextraordinary from our security briefings for the teams for theiraway matches, but since this is an important game, we don't wantanyone from the squad to get into any sort of trouble," he said onWednesday. When contacted, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) saidthey have enquired with the Football Association of Malaysia aboutthe security measures the KAFA have put in place in Kota Bharu toensure the safety of the teams and fans. "This is what we usually do for all our away matches," said RidzalSaat, FAS deputy director for marketing and competitions. "But Iwill be travelling with the Singapore fans to Kota Bharu and willbe with them at the stadium." LionsXII coach V Sundramoorthy, who donned the Kelantan jersey in1994, brushed aside concerns that the state's fans will get unruly, and said his attention is firmly fixed on returning with all threepoints. The LionsXII lead the MSL ahead of Kelantan, who have threegames in hand. A LionsXII victory in Kota Bharu will pile pressure on the homeside in their remaining matches until the season ends on July 14,and tomorrow's clash will test both sides' nerves to the limit. "We are going there to win. But if we play attacking football andend up with a draw, I'll still be satisfied, as long as we don'tgive Kelantan the advantage to chase us," said Sundram. While the LionsXII enjoyed an almost two-week break, Kelantan werebusy in the FA Cup and reached the final after their second-leg 2-2draw with Kedah on Tuesday. Said Sundram: "Kelantan have been playing too many games and may bea bit tired .. For us we have had a break, but the most importantthing is whether our boys turn up in Kota Bharu, playing as Iexpect them to play." - TODAY.
