The process of upcycling refers to the converting of discarded and disposable materials into new products or materials for better environment value. Many of us are hard pressed for time as we rush through our daily activities. It is a good idea to try and sit back at times to know if we are leading lives that we enjoy or just move from one day to another taking life as it comes. |
Artists are able to discover their creative voice as they practice this art daily. You may be able to stumble upon your own point of view if you join an online art community and try your hand at using everyday waste materials to come up with a brilliant piece of art. If you check online you will find many websites that offer great ideas for using upcycling material. You may have a lot of material lying around in your house such as discarded plastic bottles, scrap materials and junk collected over the years.
All of us are aware of the dangers of polluting the environment with indiscriminate handling of waste products. In Mozambique for instance, the Christian Council offers tools such as sewing machines, bicycles and hoes in exchange for weapons that have been relics of the former 16 year civil war in the country. Many artists use these free materials to turn them into thrones or sculptures. Another artist used melted guns to create shovel heads for planting shrubs and trees for their community.
If you have a collection of old postcards, letters, road maps and other similar materials that you have collected over the years, you can arrange them using a little imagination and create an interesting collage. Similarly, if you have old fabrics, pieces of clothing used by your children or a piece of your grandmother’s tablecloth, use your scissors and snip them into neat pieces. You could make a quilt and every time you looked at it, you would be transported back in time and recall fond memories. Be inventive and stain or tea-dye some portions of the material to give it a new look!
Are you a collector of pressed leaves and flowers? Use them on old CDs or make an interesting art creation using them with bits of other materials such as pebbles and marbles. Let your imagination flow when you decide to use discarded materials and come up with something original. NDI gallery encourages artists from all over to send in their artworks to their online art gallery. They do not accept any and every piece as they are interested in promoting quality gallery artists who can offer impactful creations that also create a message about the environment and the existing pollutants.
