These include the traditional Town of Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya, Golden Church of Dambulla, Old City of Galle and its Fortifications, Holy Town of Anuradhapura and Kandy. Sri Lanka sight-seeing State Museum: The museum which was established in 1877, homes a magnificent collection of antiques and works of art and so if you're interested in knowing more on the nations's cultural background, the museum is the location to visit. There are exhibits from archaeological sites from all over the land, beside more than four thousand traditional palm leaf manuscripts. Pettah: For the shopping maniacs, the Pettah market is the place in the main city to go to. From local handicrafts to branded products, to all sorts of goods, you'll find it all here amid the hustle. Zoological Gardens: If all of the chaos turns out to be a bit scaring, head to the quiet environs of the Colombo zoo, housing a fascinating collection of animals, birds, reptiles and fish from around the globe. Of certain interest is the flora and fauna not to forget the aquarium, which is one of its kinds in The East. It showcases more than five hundred species of sea life. Then there's the walk-through bird house, Butterfly Park and an elephant show in the evening which may catch your interest. Anuradhapura: This UNESCO Global Heritage Preservation Site, about 120 miles from Colombo, is found in a jungle which for hundreds of years hid away palaces, priories and other monuments going back to as far in the past as the third century B. C. It was actually the capital of the island more than 10 centuries back until it was attacked in 993 AD. Anuradhapura was and is still considered holy given that's was first found around a fig tree grown from a cutting of Buddha's 'tree of enlightenment'. Visit the town and you'll be ready to see lovely sculptures, carvings, trashed palaces and priories, showering pools and irrigation tanks Galle: Found about sixty miles from Colombo the port city of Galle is controlled by the 36-hectare a (89-acre) Dutch Fort. Built in 1663, it incorporates inside its walls Dutch homesteads, museums and churches.
