May 22, 2012 NORFOLK A Suffolk police officer found unconscious in the woods Saturdaymorning is recovering at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Officer James Winslow suffered injuries to an arm, a shoulder, hishead and his face. He was being treated Monday in an intensive careunit, according to his uncle, Del. Chris Jones, R-Suffolk, and hewas listed in critical condition. "He's getting better by the hour," Jones said outside thehospital Monday afternoon. About 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Winslow spotted a Ford Expedition thathad been reported stolen in Norfolk. The driver pulled over, gotout of the car, threw his hands in the air and ran into a woodedarea in the 1100 block of Nansemond Parkway, Suffolk police said. It's unclear what happened when Winslow chased him on foot, butofficers found Winslow unconscious in the woods. The police radiohe was carrying had been stolen. Suffolk police have said only that they believed he was beaten witha blunt object. Jones declined to describe his nephew's injuries. Jones said Winslow was speaking with his wife and mother and waseven walking by Monday. Jones' eyes welled with tears as hedescribed his "miraculous" recovery. "God has surely had a hand in this," he said. However, his recovery is expected to be lengthy. The Suffolk Police Officers Association Local 780 has established afund at Monarch Bank to help Winslow and his family. Donations maybe sent to Monarch Bank, 2999 Corporate Lane Suite B8, Suffolk,Va., 23434. Mark payments to the attention of the Suffolk PoliceOfficers Association, in care of Winslow. If a check is sent,Winslow's name should be written on the memo line. Jones said his family is grateful for the outpouring of support.Officers from neighboring cities who assisted with the search andothers stopped by the hospital to offer any help - even mowing thefamily's lawn. Joe Louis Staton, 43, was arrested later Saturday on charges thatinclude malicious wounding of a police officer, aggravatedmalicious wounding, grand larceny and possession of stolenproperty.
