Agra is a medieval town found on the Banks of Brook Yamuna. The town finds mention in the classic Mahabharata where it was called Agrevana, or "the border of the forest". The credit for the creation of the town goes to Raja Badal Singh around 1475, whose fort, Badalgarh, stood on or close to the location of the present Fort. Agra has achieved an enticing celebrity being the capital city of the Mughal emperors from 1526 to 1658 and it is still a major holidaymaker destination due to its many superb Mughal-era buildings, most significantly the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, all 3 of which are UNESCO Global Heritage Sites. Agra was the capital city of many dynasties including Lodhi and Mughals. Agra was believed to be built in 1475 and has a special mention in the classic Mahabharatha as Agraban (Shangri la). This town was spotted as Agra in his world map by a second century geographer Ptolemy. The splendid monuments made in the Mughal period were an ideal mix of Islamic and Hindu architectural styles. Agra was in its boom period and was thriving in the rule of Shah Jahan, but later when he shifted the capital city of Mughal dominion to Shahjahanabad in Delhi was the turning point at which the decline of Mughal Dominion and Agra had started. Agra is famous for one or two art performances. The reminiscences of the past glory and the gifts like normal paintings, folks dances, folk music, embroideries, unparallel fabric planning and stitching are still saved in this historic city. Sculptors, jewellers, musicians, painters, carpet makers, workmen, metal employees, weavers and embroiderers paid their trips to the Royal courts in the Mughal Period. Munro Road, Kinari Bazar and Sadar Bazar are the key shopping areas in Agra. The best way of travelling from Delhi to Agra is Delhi Agra Bus service.
