RENO (MINEWEB) - A steady drizzle of rain Sunday bought some relief from a forestfire that threatened the city of Timmins in Northern Ontario as nonew evacuations were anticipated. Both Kirkland Lake and Timmins remained under a state of emergency. Lake Shore Gold announced late Sunday that it would resume fullproduction at its Timmins West Mine after the company had suspendedoperations last Thursday due to high winds and smoke from theforest fire west of Timmins. Tony Makuch, Lake Shore CEO, said in a news release, "Through thecontinued hard work and significant effort of a large number ofpeople, as well as some cooperation from the weather, the smokethat resulted in our suspending operations at Timmins West Minelast Thursday has cleared and we are resuming production." However, Timmins Mayor Tom Laughren told the news media Sunday, "Weneed a lot of rain to change the situation." The Ministry of Natural Resources noted Sunday the fire had shrunk,adding they did not believe it would gain any ground on Sunday.Environmental Canada predicted the wet weather will last severaldays, which could also prevent new wildlfires. Hundreds of residents, who were forced to flee their homes andcamps near Timmins, were still displaced as of Sunday nightalthough some were allowed to return home. Meanwhile, the last of the residents evacuated last Sunday fromKirkland Lake have returned home. The Kirkland Lake fire continuesto be not under control. The Implementation Order of the Ministry of Natural Resourcesissued on May 21, 2012, remains in effect. It prohibits use,occupation, travel on and use of any and all forest access roadsand trails on Crown lands several townships. Meanwhile, milling operations of Brigus Gold's Black Fox Millremain suspended to due to a power outage. Kirkland Gold had previously said the earliest date it canrecommence mining operations is Thursday, May 31. On May 21, AuRico Gold reported power had been disrupted to itsYoung-Davidson mine. Open pit mining operations have continued asore processing has been suspended. Goldcorp told Reuters that it was closely monitoring the situationat its Porcupine mine in Timmins.
