You could tell something big was going to happen, because peoplewere playing acoustic guitars and drums outside the courthouse at8:30 in the morning, an hour when buskers usually aren t up. These ones, however, were supporters of Julian Assange, the founderof the whistleblower-promoting web site Wikileaks. His year-longjudicial odyssey has nothing to do with government documents, butrather with a foggy set of sexual-impropriety accusations that dateback to an August, 2010 trip to Sweden. But for hundreds ofprotesters carrying Free Julian banners on this sunny morning,it was all of a piece. The hour proved to be too early for Mr. Assange himself, who failedto show up for his own verdict. One of his supporters explainedthat he d been stuck in traffic. So he was not there when apanel of Supreme-court judges declared that the request for Mr.Assange's extradition has been lawfully made and his appeal againstextradition is accordingly dismissed. In other words, he is notallowed to avoid Swedish police questions by exiling himself inanother European Union country, Britain. That should have been the end of it: Mr. Assange will have to go toSweden to answer questions from police, after which the whole foggycase, which involves little more than post-coital disagreementsover condoms, will likely vanish. The 40-year-old Australian hasnever been charged with anything, or accused of any crime by aprosecutor, and most informed observers believe such an outcome isextremely unlikely. But this being Julian Assange, nothing is ever so simple, andnothing is ever final. If he had answered the police request tocome to Sweden for a few questions, the whole incident would verylikely have long been filed away and forgotten as, verypossibly, would Mr. Assange himself. But as the aftermath of Wednesday s verdict showed, the sexaccusations have become central to the mythmaking of JulianAssange. For the better part of two years, Mr. Assange has doneeverything legally possible and a number of things that hadpreviously been considered legally impossible to avoid going toSweden to answer questions, all the while claiming that he is thevictim of a vast conspiracy that stretches from Westminster toBrussels to Washington. The dozens of court appearances have becomemedia sensations, and have created a large following who see him asthe victim of international machinations. Indeed, moments after the verdict, as Mr. Assange was wending hisway through traffic, his spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson wasexplaining to reporters that this is not the final outcome what we have here is retribution from the U.S. The United States has nothing to do with this case, evenindirectly. But it has become an article of faith among Mr. Assangeand the protesters outside the court that the whole sex case is anornate plot by Washington to have him rendered to the UnitedStates, placed in solitary confinement, and sentenced as atreasonous accessory to Bradley Manning, the 24-year-old U.S.soldier accused of stealing 250,000 diplomatic cables and passingthem to Wikileaks. And, just as he was reaching the court, fortune smiled on himagain: The judges granted his lawyers 14 days to appeal the caseonce again, on the grounds that one legal argument may have beenmissed an argument based on the obscurely named ViennaConvention on the Law of Treaties. Beyond that, if Mr. Assange is not promptly shipped off toStockholm in mid-June, there was talk of an appeal to a Europeancourt. For the protesters outside, there was almost a joyous moodof gloom: Julian Assange would remain before the cameras foranother big court appearance, and their hero would remain a bravevictim.
