How to set up an interview process for English teachers

Education
Setting up an interview process for any job could be an overwhelming task, but setting up for English teachers could even be a more intimidating task. Before setting up the interview, you may need to have a panel of interviewers who will help you out with the interviews. This will give both the interviewers and the interviewee in this case the English teachers a fair judgement on their performance after the interview. The teacher will be measured by different persons who have different backgrounds and will therefore give their opinions on how the teachers performed in a just manner. The teachers will also feel confident with the whole interview process when it is not a one man show affair. If you are interviewing on the phone, then you may need to setup different times for the different interviewers and the interviews. This will enable a comfortable environment without the interviews clashing or being seen as disorganized. You will also definitely need a quiet environment either at home or in the office where you can interview the teachers without outside interference. You may also opt to interview the teachers through email or skype. In this case you may need to schedule your time accordingly and be online at the time of the interview. The interviewees should not be the ones to wait for you. Think about setting up the interviews on a day that you are relaxed and at the top of your game. Prepare ahead of the interviews to make sure your have everything with you, the questions, and manuals if needed, interview materials including note books and handouts etc. This will allow you to be relaxed and not running up and down when the actual day comes! Also make sure that your interview questions are arranged in order of importance and give them priority. English teachers might be more organized due to the nature of work they do; so they should not be the ones to find you in an awkward position or look disorganized. Recording the interview might also be a good idea especially if you have more than one suitable candidate for the job. When you record the interview sessions you might at your own time sit down with your panel and review the recordings. Here you may be able to identify small flaws that the teachers might have exhibited bit which you did not notice when on live interviews. This will give the opportunity to evaluate each teacher independently and keenly and come up with the best candidate(s) for the English teacher positions. But recording alone is not enough proof; you should also take notes during the interview sessions just in case technology fails. Exuding confidence when conducting interviews is also very important, otherwise it might turn out to be “Hunter hunted position”. As much as most of the time it is the interviewees who show lack of confidence and may be seen trembling, the interviewer might also be found in the same position especially if the candidates you are interviewing are experienced and might ask you challenging questions about the job they are vying for. When the actual interview begins, start by knowing your candidates, note down their names or if you are having their prior documentations, then refer to their bio data. Address them by their names and start by asking smaller details about them while gradually moving ahead with the most complex questions. Ask leading questions that may make you understand the candidates better and ask for clarifications where you are not clear about what they answered. One mistake that most interviewers do is to try and dig for answers from the candidates; answers that you want to hear. Let the candidates explain themselves, may be what you wanted to hear is not what they have to say but still have a better answer to give. Do not interrupt the candidates when they are giving answers. Though it is not uncommon for candidates to give answers that are not what you wanted to hear, let them finish and then ask your questions or clarifications. After every question that you ask, relax back and listen carefully to the answers provided while jotting down on a notebook. Prove to the candidates that you are a good listener, one of the qualifications that a prospective English teacher must have. Take your time to listen to the interviewee and think ahead on what the next question would be and what response you expect. As said before, writing down the interview session or recording or both is a good way to come back later and review the whole interview. Don’t wait till the interviewee has gone that’s when you start grappling with what answer he gave. Refer back to your notebook or recording and revisit the Q & A session at that particular moment. One of the most important parts of the whole interview process is to check the facts. It is most likely that the interviewee did not give the whole truth but the half truths in his answers. Though it might be difficult to know the truths and half truths during real-time interview, you can sit down after the process and counter check the facts. People tend to lie about their academic and/ or professional experience in their CV's. It is important that you get the correct facts to be able to determine if this is the correct candidate for an English teacher or teachers. The responsibility of ascertaining the truth lies with you otherwise you may end up with the wrong employees in your payroll. Once the interview is over, you need to have with you all the contacts of the candidates so that you can follow up with them. Give them a thank you note for dedicating their time to attend the session with you and promise to call them or get back to them once the verdict is over. Finally, setting up an interview might be a success or failure, make sure you have the expertise to conduct one and you have attended trainings in conducting interviews. This will go a long way to hire the right English teachers.
