Acupuncture in a San Jose Walk-in Clinic

Health,Fitness
Originating from ancient China, acupuncture involves stimulating specific points on the body by inserting very thin needles through the skin to improve bodily functions. This is a type of alternative medicine that is offered at a San Jose walk-in clinic.

How it works

The treatment is based on a theory that health is the result of a balance of life force which flows through meridians or pathways. Sometimes, these forces are imbalanced, resulting in illness. Hence, needles are inserted through the three hundred and fifty acupuncture points in the body for restoration.

In the West, acupuncture is explained through concepts of neuroscience. They see acupuncture points as places where nerves, muscles and connective tissues can be stimulated to increase blood flow. This happens while triggering the activity of the body's natural painkillers.

What it is for

Acupuncture relieves muscle, dental, and labor pain, along with migraine, menstrual cramps, asthma, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel syndrome. It also reduces the symptoms of drug withdrawal and prevents relapse, nausea, and vomiting after surgery and chemotherapy. It relieves symptoms of severe dry mouth among patients treated with radiation for head and neck cancer. It also helps people relearn the skills they lost because of brain damage from a stroke.

The risks

You may experience soreness, minor bleeding or bruising after acupuncture. It can be dangerous if you have a bleeding disorder or are taking blood thinners. Make sure that your acupuncturist uses sterile, disposable needles to avoid being infected with blood-borne diseases. People with a pacemaker are also discouraged to undergo the treatment as it can involve mild electrical pulses. These can interfere with the pacemaker. Meanwhile, acupuncture has also stimulated labor in some cases, so pregnant women should avoid. Otherwise, their babies will be put at risk for premature delivery. If the needles are pushed in too deeply for some reason, then they could puncture internal organs.

How it is done

Reliable practitioners, especially those from a San Jose walk-in clinic, may ask about your symptoms, behaviors and lifestyle to work on a treatment plan. Most acupuncture courses consist of up to twelve sessions, each lasting for half an hour. You will lie down, positioned depending on where the needless will be inserted. Then, your provider will look for the points to access the chi that is blocked. Note that the appropriate points may be far away from your health problems. After the provider finds the points, they will quickly tap about twenty needles into your skin. Some may be placed deeper than others, depending on what the provider believes is necessary to restore the flow of chi. When the needle reaches the right depth, there should be a deep aching sensation. The area may tingle, feel numb, itch, or be a little sore. This should be a sign that the energy flow, or chi, has been accessed. Your practitioner may twirl the needles or apply mild electrical impulses after they've been placed. They will remain there for twenty minutes.

Be reminded, though, that there is no scientific evidence for the existence of chi or the meridians. Click here for more information.
