It is hard to understand. Alcoholics keep on drinking although they know that it’s ruining their lives. Gamblers keep on gambling despite overwhelming financial problems. Smokers destroy their lungs, addicts of adult movies lose their relationships – and nonetheless they keep on doing whatever it is that slowly ruins their personalities, their hopes and eventually their lives. When wondering why, the obvious answer is because it’s an addiction. What are the real drivers, though, that make a person indulge in such a self-destructive behavior? In most cases, later addicts grow up with a very low self-esteem. Lack of emotional dedication, physical neglect (e.g. the child is not taken in the arms a lot), emotional invasion (“you’re a loser”, “why can’t you be like your brother?”) and many other experiences that seem to be relatively insignificant can be the seed for growing personality disorders and compulsive behaviors later in life. Take the example of a seven-year old boy suffering from the divorce of the parents. The father moves out of the house. It’s typical for a boy to relate everything to himself. As children we believe that the world needs to turn around us. We are the center of the world.” If daddy goes away it must be my fault. He doesn’t like me anymore., I ‘m not good enough. I’m bad.” Let’s imagine that five years later that boy – whose self-confidence is already diminished – also starts experiencing bullying at school. He will suffer even more, believe that something is fundamentally wrong with him and feel ashamed and guilty. If a the age of 16 or 20 this young man discovers that the excitement of a poker night or the satisfaction from watching adult movies on the web can provide relief, quickly and effectively, it will be a behavior that he will probably repeat, the beginning of an addiction. Much later that man will recognize that his behavior has some very negative consequences. However, the belief that he’s not worth anything is still held deeply within. Most of us like to act in accordance with our beliefs and convictions. Therefore, for this man, self-destructive behavior is in line with the beliefs held about himself. If that behavior provides short-term relief, it will be even more likely that he is going to repeat it no matter how bad the consequences are. He thinks that he doesn’t deserve anything good anyway. Addiction therapies must always put great emphasis on identifying and correcting wrong convictions that the addicts have about themselves. For more information on addiction therapies visit .
