What makes a website wonderful? You don’t have to be a web developer to know the difference between a good and bad site. The good websites are the ones where straight away you know what they offer and where you can easily find what you are after. The bad ones are the opposite. Here are some useful ideas to help make your website one of the good ones. Capture Your Audience Just like a stand-up comedian, you only have a few seconds to impress. Your landing page needs to be exciting, but not overwhelming. Give your audience a reason to stick around, and to delve further. The average time spent on a website is less than a minute, so this is not much time to sell your message. Conversion While it is one thing to get people to visit your website, the main point of them being there is to either make a sale, or use your services. A call-to-action is a must. A few ideas for converting on your website include adding a sign up form on the homepage for joining your mailing list, offering sales, scrolling text for testimonials (word of mouth is the most effective marketing tool) or live feeds from social media pages. Simplify It is important to keep your message simple. Try not to have too much content on your homepage, and encourage people to investigate further. Your menu needs to have clear page titles, and not too many pages. Remember that if people get lost on your site they are likely to give up. You know when you walk into a department store looking for something in particular and it can seem daunting, and may cause you to turn around and walk out empty handed. This is definitely not what you want your visitors to experience. Keep the process streamlined. Remember, they can always contact you if they want further information. Get Found It is one thing to have a website, but you first need to be able to be found. SEO is extremely competitive, and can cost you thousands of dollars to be found. There are a few things that you can do for free that will help. It often surprises me at businesses that run print advertising campaigns, but don’t include there web address. Tell everyone about your website, and give them a reason to visit it. This includes having your website on your email signature, business cards, letterhead and other print material; including your website address on your voice mail and telling anyone that will listen about your wonderful website! You can also add your business to many free listings such as True Local, Hot Frog, Yellow Pages online, etc. You may also consider paying a small fee to join local business organizations or clubs that are specific to your industry. Analyze The last, but certainly not the least important tip for creating a wonderful website is to analyze where you leads are coming from. Find out what tools are working, and concentrate on expanding your business using these avenues. If most of your business is coming through word of mouth, then reward those that are helping spread the word. There are analytical tools out there that are great at giving insights into not only how many visitors your website get, but also how long they spend on each page, whether they are return customers, the time of the day, and where they are from. Use these details to determine a forward approach to marketing your business. Author Bio – Director of Wonderful Websites, Shelley Gross, is passionate about working to promote businesses.
