When it comes to jewelry, I don't wear a lot. But there is one item that I never fail to wear, day in and day out... My watch. For some reason I have always had a fascination with time pieces. Something about all those little gears working together in a precise way just captures my attention. I can't walk by a jewelry counter without looking at all the watches. I don't need another one, I already have about 30 of them, but I stop and look anyway. Over the years my taste in watches has grown. My first one was a little Timex watch that really did "take a licking and keep on ticking". It's about 45 years old now and still runs great. My collection now includes everything from a classic Mickey Mouse watch to Swiss chronograph masterpieces. You hear that term a lot, chronograph, but do you know what it means? Basically it's a watch with a built in stop-watch. Usually they are the ones with the little dials within the main dial of the watch. But there are also little dials that can be set to other time zones and depth gauges for divers. Now, as far as jewelry goes, there are few things that can compare with the variety you can get from watches. They come in almost every color, every kind of metal and some even have artwork on the faces. There are plastic watches, rugged watches, and very elaborate watches. Some watches that you wear on your wrist, and others you carry in your pocket. Some of them even have clear faces so you can see inside and watch all the little gears in motion. Then there are the watches you wind, the ones that run on a battery, ones that wind themselves with your arm motion, and even solar powered watches. Most of the finer watches also have jewels inside that are part of the works. Of course everyone is familiar with the tradition of giving somebody a gold watch when they retire, and the phrase "gold watch" has almost become synonymous with heading out to pasture, but gold watches are far more popular than just retirement icons. Those are the ultimate men's jewelry status symbols. Silver is another popular choice for watches, and some have both gold and silver combined. Stainless steel is also a metal of choice for everyday watches. But although I have some prized gold and silver watches, they aren't my favorites. The ones I love are made from titanium. They weigh next to nothing and have a very classy pewter color to them. You can wear them all day long and practically forget they are on your wrist. If you work with your hands, these watches are fantastic as they won't hinder your movement or create fatigue. So the next time you are thinking about jewelry, stop by the watch counter and see what's new. The best thing about watches is that they span a huge price range and you can always find something to enjoy at a price you can afford.
