What is a modern sideboard?

Business
A sideboard is a small cabinet with a table top. This top may be used to keep food, display decorative articles such as candle stands, silverware or china. There was a time when sideboards were nothing more than functional pieces of furniture. They were placed against a wall near a dining table. Any extra food or plates/cutlery that was not being used at the table would be kept on it. In the 18th century, sideboards moved into the kitchen. They generally had open plate shelves with cabinets below. These were also called credenzas, buffets or Welsh dressers. They were used largely for storage, display, serving etc.

A modern sideboard serves all these purposes but does a lot more than that as well. It can be a piece of art in itself. Most homeowners take care to ensure that the design and the style of the modern sideboard matches that of the modern dining table and chairs that they have. It is also used as entertainment shelving. It can hold warming or chafing dishes, bowls, platters and drinks. It allows convenient access to servers who are waiting on a table. Even in a more informal setting, it can be used as a buffet table. Food can be laid out on it and guests can fill their own plates.

Some sideboards also have a hutch with shelving. The top of the sideboard can hold and display dinnerware or china. Some designs also have cup hooks. A sideboard will ideally have drawers and cabinets below. Glassware, table linen such as placemats, napkins and tablecloths can be stored there. Some people like to use sideboards as a small bar. Drinks can be set out on it too. Contemporary sideboards are a little different. They are designed to be used as an extension for the dining table but may also have some cut-out sections for a stereo or a TV.

In some homes they may be used as a design TV stand. If you are buying a standalone design TV stand, you will find that there are a lot of varieties and materials to choose from. In some cases the TV can just be placed on top and there will be a cabinet with shelves, underneath it. Some TV stands have a pedestal design and are good for contemporary-looking spaces. Minimalistic furniture has become very popular and people are opting for furniture that is less elaborate and bulky. Some stands also have very cleverly placed shelves that can be used to stack DVD’s and records.

If you want to place a DVD player close to the TV, buy a stand that has an additional shelf for it. When you are buying furniture, do not fall prey to design. Opt for functionality and quality first. There are several online stores that sell this furniture. You can choose a category on the basis of size, material or style and then pick what you want. Always keep in mind that the furniture you buy should not be outsized for the space that it is going to be placed in. The best way to avoid blunders such as these is to take a measurement of the area that you are going to place the furniture in. While shopping online, look at the description as the size of the product will be mentioned on it.

Buy the Design TV Stand of your choice from Neofurn. Any modern sideboard that you buy should be functional and attractive.
