Which french marshal was invited to become king of sweden? When Napoleon, Emperor of the French, created 18 of his best generals Marshals of France, perhaps the most determined was Jean Baptiste Bernadotte. Bernadotte led his troops in many successful battles over the following years, including the glorious victory of Austerlitz. In 1809, Bernadotte quarreled with Napoleon and resigned his command. The following year Bernadotte was elected as Crown Prince of Sweden and heir to the ageing Charles XIII. Bernadotte took his new duties seriously and pledged himself to the Swedish crown. When Napoleon invaded Swedish Pomerania in 1812, Bernadotte instantly abandoned his old master and joined the Tsar of Russia against Napoleon. In 1813 Bernadotte led Swedish troops against Napoleon at the Battle of Leipzig. When the war was over, Bernadotte settled down to rule Sweden. He became king as Charles XIV in 1818 and ruled his kingdom efficiently until his death in 1844. The descendants of Bernadotte still occupy the throne of Sweden. For details
