The battle is heating up over Twin Shaft mixing vs Drum Mixers when it comes to high production concrete plants. Oddly enough, concrete precasters have long abandoned drum mixing equipment in favor of more vigorous techniques. In heavy construction however the drum mixer has ruled superior for decades, but twin shaft mixing is starting to gain traction. Twin shaft mixing is not new, it has long been used in Europe where central mix concrete plants are as common as ready mix concrete plants are in the United States. At a recent conference, the owner of a large central mix plant manufacturer explained as part of a segment on Modern Concrete Batch Plant technologies that twin shaft mixing was really just created so other companies could compete with their superior drum mixer. While I have no doubt he sincerely believe that to be the case, his understanding are seriously misguided. The reality is twin shaft mixing offers the most vigorous mixing action available. Period. Now if you want to debate the necessity of vigorous mixing action, that may be a conversation worth having. We have all heard that you can achieve a cement savings by using a twin shaft mixer, but to date I have never seen the statistics proved. As of the date of this post, I have multiple contacts that are indicating they have new data to prove the claims, but so far the information has not been received. Cement savings aside, as a company that sells both twin shaft and drum mixers, in most cases we recommend the twin shaft mixer.
