If you were looking for a great show and dance music, it was The Tams, or if you just wanted to pat your foot to some good music, it was The Tams you wanted to hear. The Tams were formed in Atlanta, GA in 1962. The original members were Joseph Pope and Charles Pope (founders), Horace Key, Floyd Ashton, and Robert Lee Smith. The name came from the Tam O’shanter matching hats they wore while on stage. From this trademark, the legendary Tams name was born. After signing with Arlen records, came their first Billboard hit in 1962, the single “Untie Me”, which reached # 12 on the R&B chart. In 1963, ABC Records signed The Tams and their first album produced a Top Ten hit, “What Kind of Fool”. As they played throughout the country a string of hits came, including “Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy”, “I’ve Been Hurt” and “Hey Girl”. Since then, they have released over 15 albums and been honored with one Platinum and two Gold records. The Tams have toured and recorded with Jimmy Buffet and performed with such greats as Gladys Knight, Jackie Wilson and many more. " Although, You Lied To Your Daddy", released in 1964 never went past # 70 on the charts, it remained one of the best beach songs of the 1960's. The Tams received the title, “Beach Band of the Decade” in 1986 and have been inducted into the Georgia Hall of Fame, the Atlanta Hall of Fame and the Beach Music Hall of Fame. The Tams are still recording and touring today, mainly in the southeast. Original member, Joseph Pope, died March 16, 1996, yet he lives on in song. The Tams the best beach band of all times.
