Why does diabetes affect your eyes?

Current research indicates that excess sugar in the blood directly to eye damage, mostly affect the blood vessels carrying blood in the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer of tissue at the bottom of the lining of your eye. Damage to these vessels seem to be directly related to how high your blood sugar is, and for how long.

How effective treatments available to diabetic retinopathy?

A procedure known as laser photocoagulation can prevent blindness in 90% of patients. This procedure can save and seal off the damaged blood vessels, which stops them from bleeding. In the early stages of the eye disease, this procedure can restore their vision within about six months. However, in many cases, laser surgery only slows down vision loss, not restore it. Thus, the treatment of vision will remain the same, without treatment, it will be even worse.
