Of the different types of airsoft rifles available today, spring airsoft rifles were the first to ever become available. Developed in Japan, they were originally intended to mimic real rifles as much as possible, for the purposes of weapons training. It is only in relatively recent years that enthusiasts have turned airsoft into a sport. Since the invention of spring airsoft guns, gas and electric airsoft guns have followed, and they have captured the preference of most airsoft enthusiasts. There are still, however, some instances in which spring airsoft guns remain the gun of choice for airsoft enthusiasts. These spring guns can also be divided into 2 major categories – the metal airsoft guns and the plastic airsoft guns. Spring airsoft rifles work in the most basic manner of all the airsoft guns, and the mechanism is essentially a spring set behind a device that, when pushed forward by the spring, compresses the air in front of it and propels the BB out of the gun. So in order to fire the gun, it is first necessary to draw the spring back. This is done manually, by pulling on a slide for pistols, a pump for shotguns, and a bolt for rifles. This also means that it is necessary to pull the spring back manually with each shot, thus limiting the maximum rate of fire of the gun. It is this limited rate of fire that is the greatest consideration in most airsoft enthusiasts choosing guns that are either gas-operated or electric. Gas-operated and electric airsoft guns use a more complex mechanism to fire continuously when the trigger is held down, and so can fire many more BBs in the same amount of time as compared to a spring airsoft gun. Both gas and electric airsoft guns do, however, suffer from the disadvantage of having to depend on a propellant that can be exhausted. An electric airsoft gun can run out electricity once its battery goes flat and a gas-operated gun can no longer fire once it runs out of gas propellant. Most airsoft enthusiasts consider this a relatively small disadvantage, however, and simply carry spare batteries or spare gas canisters. The one type of gun that still features many spring-operated versions is the sniper rifle. This is because of the very particular role that it is meant to play. There is an old saying about how a good sniper operates – “one shot, one kill.” This is intended to describe how a sniper should be accurate enough that he only ever has to fire a single shot to get his target. In the world of airsoft, the role of the sniper is similar, although distances are not as long as they are in real life. This means that the slower rate of fire of a spring airsoft gun is not as much of a disadvantage. Also, no matter what type of airsoft gun you are considering, metal airsoft guns are inevitably more expensive than similar plastic versions. Metal guns are preferred, however, because they feel more realistic and are more durable. Spring airsoft rifles tend to be less expensive as compared to electric and gas airsoft rifles, so it is a much more affordable option to purchase a metal spring airsoft gun than a metal version of any other type of gun.
